About this listen

Tavi of Calderon, now captain of his own Legion, has been fighting a bitter war for two years. Then he discovers the invading Canim warriors are harbingers of a far greater threat.

The Canim are being hunted in their turn by a savage race that forced them from their homeland - and which has pursued them to the Aleran borders. With options fast running out, Tavi proposes an alliance with the Canim. But the Senate's new military commander wishes only to wipe out the Canim 'scourge' and would also kill Aleran slaves that have sought freedom with these aggressors.

Tavi must reconcile Aleran and Canim, slavemaster and slave, Citizen and Proletarian, if an alliance is to be forced. And he must lead his Legion in defiance of the law, against both friend and enemy - before the greatest army of all launches its assault.

Another gripping installment

The drama is no longer interrupted with musical interludes. So much better to listen to. The narrator continues to bring the story to life. Straight on to the next book for me!

Proper Rags to Riches Fantasy.

Incredibly well written and narrated with very well crafted character arcs and a gripping storyline. Everything you want from a fantasy story with a great magic system and setting. I haven’t been able to put the headphones down since the first book.

A Fantastic Series

I have yet to encounter a less than excellent instalment in this series. Brilliantly written and engaging throughout.

it's all coming together...

These are not separate stand alone stories, rather it's one, long, continuing tale - feels a little like Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time in that regard. Fortunately, not much time is wasted rehashing what has gone before in order to bring a new listener up to speed (this is a series you don't want to start midway through), which makes it a pleasure to listen to book by book in quick succession.

I had a moment of concern near the beginning of this instalment that we might be venturing into "padding it out" territory - fortunately that feeling was short-lived, and it picks back up to it's normal furious pace.

We finally reach the "big reveal" (even if the previous clues had long since given it away) but there are a few new threads of interest introduced (I think - not sure where it all might lead though) . Yes, it's following a typical formula of "hero finds himself in a bit of pickle, but still manages to save the day"; and although the outcome is predictable, the way he gets there is not...........keeps it entertaining, and the pace means you can't nod off else you'll miss something.

Perfect entertainment for those long commutes - and for once I'm not overly bothered when those trains are delayed yet again and I get a little longer to escape to another world where good eventually overcomes bad.

NO Ramdom Trumpets!

Great story, very well read by Kate Reading. With previous books in this series there have been random trumpet blasts throughout. No such problem with this book. 5 stars.
