About this listen

Ethan Fletcher’s a rising star in the modeling industry, and after landing an ad on a billboard, things were looking up for him. From the outside looking in, he was living his best possible life. No one knows the struggles Ethan faced, or that every night he removed the carefully constructed mask he had to slip on just to face the outside world. However, the camera wasn’t the only thing in love with Ethan’s face.

When the gifts started to arrive, they seemed innocent enough. But, the attention from the fan who called himself the Suitor had Ethan on edge, and when someone important in Ethan’s life goes missing, he knows it’s no coincidence. Receiving no help from the local police, Ethan seeks comfort from a very unlikely source. Together, they find themselves in a race against time to catch the Suitor before Ethan becomes his next victim.

Captivated is book one in the Out of Darkness series. It talks about stalking, kidnapping, murder, and mental illness. Captivated ends with a happy for now and is a continuing series. This audiobook is an extremely slow burn with a romance that progresses throughout the series.

Brilliant start to the series

Wow, this is a new to me author, and it is so different to what I usually listen to, but it was so good. I also have to commend Kenneth Obi for the voice he has for The Suitor..... oh boy it was so sinister, but oh so right for the character.

When we first meet Ethan, we soon find out that he suffers from severe anxiety, but only his best friend who is also his agent, knows this about him. He also has no family, so he seems to find ways to cope by himself, with his agents help.
Ethan seems to be ok with everything, until a modelling contract he participated in, then has his image on billboards all across town, and it is here that someone sees it, and decides that Ethan looks like someone special.

Now Ethan is beginning to receive anonymous gifts to his home address, and this scares him, so much that he gets his agent over to collect the gifts. Even wondering how the person, who calls himself The Suitor managed to find out his home address.

Now things seem to get worse for Ethan, as not long after it seems like his manager has disappeared, but he has nobody he can call - or does he? He then finds someone he can call, but will he show his true self to this person?

I really enjoyed listening to this audio, and I can't wait to see what happens next in this series. This is one story that kept me hooked from the first, and I think what I really liked was that you were getting both Ethan's and The Suitors point of view with each chapter.

Wonderfully creepy

This is a brilliant start to the series. Such a creepy story had me feeling a mixture of I don’t want to know what happens next but I’ve got to know. I suppose it’s the equivalent of watching a movie through my fingers lol. I really like the way the story gives the two points of view, makes it very interesting.
Kenneth Obi does creepy extremely well, amongst his many other talents. He switches effortless between the Suitor (stalker) and Ethan bringing their characters out so well. If it wasn’t for his narration I’m not sure I would’ve continued with the book because it’s not my thing but I’m so glad I did.

as good as the ebook

The story is always 4 or 5 stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening, but not more then twice a year.
it's like a B

Brilliant start to a new series

Wow! I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is told from two points of view and the narrator, Kenneth Obi, was amazing. When I read the book it was good, but listening to it ... it became something else! This is a new to me author and I will certainly be looking for more of her work.

Attention to detail

I alternatively listened and read chapters of Captivated. It is one of those stories that took me a couple of chapters to get into but once I did, I couldn't stop until I finished the whole book. Ethan and poor Bea are both beautifully drawn and sympathetic characters. The attention to detail is superb and this is carried through into a believable plot. X is very intriguing and I can't wait to find out more about him. The Suitor is an amazing creation, and I actually had a (very) little empathy for him on occasions!

The narration by Kenneth Obi is excellent. Always clearly spoken, the different voices suit the characters perfectly. The fear is Bea's voice felt real and the many facets of The Suitor's personality are eerily portrayed.

I thought it was a romance

So... I don't know. I'm conflicted.

It was well written story, beautifully narrated by Kenneth Obi, but it wasn't a romance. I knew before handed it would be a slow burn, but there is nothing to burn here, there is no romance, zero, nada.

Up until 20% of the book, I was thinking the main couple would be Ethan and The Suitor (the stalker), because I couldn't see anyone else in Ethan's life up to that moment. And Then, another character slowly appear and we see a friendship beginning. This part was fine, was actually the best part of the book, the way they got friends. But ends there, unfortunately. The 3 main characters (yeah, The Suitor got a POV so he was one of the MC's in my humble opinion) stayed two dimensional, we don't actually know much about them.

So while I liked the story and it kept me entertained for the most part, it felt lacking.

I don't have much to say about the narration. I like Kenneth Obi for the majority of his works and this is one of them. He knew how to make different voices and intonations for the 3 MCs, his narration was clear and with all the right pauses, it didn't feel rushed or anything.

I was given this audiobook as part of a huge giveaway by the narrator. No review was expected of me.
