Summary

When a covert police operation in Northern Ireland goes badly wrong, Grace Macallan is reassigned to the newly formed Lothian & Borders Major Crime Team and forced to rebuild her career and her reputation. But when a brutal attack on a prostitute turns into a series of murders, the Major Crime Team is under pressure.

The tabloid headlines are lurid, and the team badly needs a result. With a new life to build in a new city, a new boss as smooth as an 18-year-old malt and a high-profile lawyer as the chief suspect, Grace begins to wonder if telling the truth is always the right thing to do.

Good characters and story line

Starts well, becomes a bit of a slow burn and then picks up a lot. Some interesting characters with more depth than other detective stories

Interesting

A very slow start almost made me switch off, it’s not until chapter 5 (?) that any local crime is committed, however I’m glad I stuck with the story. Earlier chapters served as useful background which mostly added to the narrative.

The main storyline was well laid out and driven. The conclusion wasn’t obvious and so held interest and attention.

The narrator is excellent too. Everything came together to make a most enjoyable listen which I wasn’t expecting.
