About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Christmas indulge in a feel-good collection of stories from the author of Cold Comfort Farm.

The title story tells of a typical Christmas at the farm before the coming of Flora Poste. It is a parody of the worst sort of family Christmas: Adam Lambsbreath dresses up as Father Christmas in two of Judith's red shawls. There are unsuitable presents, unpleasant insertions into the pudding and Aunt Ada Doom orders Amos to carve the turkey, adding: 'Ay, would it were a vulture, 'twere more fitting!'

Quite a remarkable book of short stories

Short stories that offer so much insight into interwar life.
Take time to listen. There’s a common theme of the restless spirit in all of us but never more so for the people who inhabited our isles between the wars. The prose is superb. I love her description of minutiae. Just don’t expect to hear much from Flora Poste!!

An absorbing odyssey and so brilliantly executed!

This audio book was a joy from beginning to end full of astute observations , rich and true characters. It is written with so much nuance, poignancy and humour. So many of these stories seem brave for the era and tackle inequality and snobbery with a razor wit and charm at the same time.
This is expertly produced, edited and clearly by a brilliant team who have a respectful regard for both listeners and the material. I’ll look out for more from this team.
The narrator Emma Handy is a genius who used her lovely voice to rich effect inhabiting a range of ages and types. I marvelled at her ability to be so many differing characters at once. Her warm voice is intelligent and picks up on so much subtlety and with such a clever edge.
In short, this volume is a joy!
I hope we have more Stella Gibbons and more from this winning team in editing, producing and picking such star readers.

Dated and depressing

Some of the short stories held my attention but not all. Dated. Some interesting concepts re women's lives at that time, and the dilemmas over relationships/marriage and work. Easy but dull
