About this listen

Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Ian Lavender, and Bill Pertwee star in the radio sequel sitcom to Dad’s Army.

'The Pilot': In this rare pilot, war is over and former Home Guard Captain Mainwaring plans to renovate Frambourne-on-Sea’s pier. However, to get a loan, he approaches local bank manager Arthur Wilson.

'The Business Proposition': In the first episode of the series (and after the sad death of Arthur Lowe), Bert Hodges, former ARP warden, is looking for a partner to renovate the pier. Maybe he can get Frank Pike to talk to his ‘uncle’ Arthur....

'The Bank Loan': How can Hodges and Pike persuade Wilson to loan them the money?

'Who Owned the Pier?': Pike and Hodges research the history of Frambourne Pier, and a visit by the electrician brings worrying news.

With Arthur Lowe as George Mainwaring, John Le Mesurier as Arthur Wilson, Ian Lavender as Frank Pike, and Bill Pertwee as Bert Hodges, 'It Sticks Out Half a Mile' was written by Harold Snoad and Michael Knowles, who also adapted Dad’s Army for radio.

Pure class

A lovely spin off from dad's army. Just a shame about the late Arthur Lowe.

'It sticks out half a mile' radio show

Great spin off, just a shame it is such short series as it had great potential

Good old fashioned comedy

If you liked Dad's Amy, you will ensure a smile from what happened in the seaside town on peace time

Radio comedy gold

A classic gem that exudes warmth, charm and wit, lovely to hear the Dads army characters again in this spin off. A great listen!

If you enjoyed Dads Army you'll love this...

Being a massive dads Army fan I was really excited when I discovered this radio recording and I wasn’t disappointed when I bought it. Pilot episode with Lowe and Le Mesurier is a wonderful last chance to hear these two fantastic actors bring to life their altered egos, Mainwaring and Wilson. Whilst the other episodes certainly miss Mainwaring (after the death of Arthur Lowe) they are never the less very enjoyable, with the return of Hodges and Pike.

Past it best

Although I enjoy full cast recordings unfortunately this isn’t the best of its type, so rather disappointing.

Pilot can confuse the series

It’s great to hear the Dads Army cast together in a whole new story after the war , but the inclusion of the pilot episode with no explanation can confuse the story. In the pilot episode George Mainwaring is trying to purchase the pier & then episode 2 Pike & Hodges are trying to purchase it. If you weren’t aware of Arthur Lowes passing you’d be thinking do the characters have amnesia. Arthur Lowe died in 1982 after the pilot episode but his widow had enjoyed the show & urged them to restart with new casting .. not as good as Dads Army but still classic humour
