Car detective Jack Colby is asked by the “Mad Major” to find one of the original five cars that took part in the Peking to Paris rally of 1907. The Major and two fellow trustees plan to rerun the rally for charity – only this time in Kent with towns and villages on the route transforming themselves into their Chinese counterparts. He is determined to find one of the two original De Dion Bouton competitors, which is rumoured to be somewhere in Kent. Jack accepts the challenge, but he is soon plunged into a different and far more dangerous investigation.
