About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

As for queens, they are either hated or forgotten. She already knows which option suits her best...

Perfect for fans of Ariadne and The Song of Achilles, this is the extraordinary retelling of history's most infamous heroine.

Mother. Monarch. Murderer. Magnificent.

You are born to a king, but marry a tyrant. You stand helplessly as he sacrifices your child to placate the gods. You watch him wage war on a foreign shore and comfort yourself with violent thoughts of your own.

You play the part, fooling enemies who deny you justice. Slowly, you plot.

You are Clytemnestra.

But when the husband who owns you returns in triumph, what then?

Acceptance or vengeance - infamy follows both. So you bide your time and wait, until you might force the gods' hands and take revenge. Until you rise. For you understood something that the others don't. If power isn't given to you, you have to take it for yourself.

A blazing novel set in the world of Ancient Greece and told through the eyes of its greatest heroine, this is a thrilling tale of power and prophecies, of hatred, love, and of an unforgettable Queen who fiercely dealt out death to those who wronged her.

What a novel! Beautiful & ugly, gentle & cruel this book has clearly been majorly researched. It is great to give historical figures a voice and what a voice Clytemnestra had! Love love loved this book. 10/10...

I loved this story, I enjoy most re-telling of Greek myth. This has been on of my favourites upto now. The narration was good, but was a little bit monotone in parts.

For me this story pulls all the famous Greek myths together and makes them into a coherent human story. Great character development, and very effective descriptive writing. This was an outstanding novel on every level.

Ancient history made real

I’ve read a few different versions of Clytemnestra’s story and in my opinion this is the best retelling. Great characters and the story unravels beautifully.

I had little knowledge of the myths of Greece. This book brought the names and natures of those characters to life. I do not hesitate to recommend this book.

Superb book

Reminded me a little of Madeleine Millers Circe. Enjoyed reading a retelling by a Mediterranean author

Great retelling, enjoyed the performance

Such a gem. The rich imagery and mastressful story design was compelling and suspenseful even if you know the myths. The audio narration is performed with a deep sense of understanding for the book, characters and story. Together these two talented women made ancient Sparta come alive. Highly recommended.

Stunning retelling, extraordinary performance

I love the Greek myths. This book brings these characters so much to live that you forget these aren't real people. I finished the book and was so disappointed when it finished. I was with her struggles every step of the way. A strong female character brought to lifs.

Hearing all the male characters from Greek myths to live you forget they also are not real life figures from history. I would compare the author with Stephen Fry's retelling but without the humour he brings.

Wow. Just wow
