About this listen

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Awful Narration

Great story - terrible narrator. So many incorrect or mispronounced words. Thankfully a freebie, otherwise would have returned.

Change narrator!

I had to listen at 0.9 speed as the narrator went so fast, there was no suspense! A lot of the character's voices merged into the same dubious accent, and I wish pathologist Rory Wilkinson's Scottish lilt had been continued.
I thought the story was good...not quite as investing as Jackman and Evans.

Good study, odd narration

I like Joy Ellis's books and have really enjoyed listening to Richard Armitage read the Jackman and Evans books. This book is very similar and even shares a character (i.e. Rory Wilkinson). However, while Armitage's narration makes for excellent listening, Henrietta Meire's does not.

Some of the accents are very odd and Meire's male voices tend to be a bit whiney. Rory Wilkinson is a camp Scotsman in the Jackman and Evans books but Meire's narration does not do justice to the characters dark humour and the voice is grating. I'm also not sure where his accent is meant to come from. The main character is a prickly woman and the narration is snappy and abrupt making her very unlikeable. This may be intentional as that is the characters persona.(The voice does improve in subsequent books as does the character).

I also think the book may have been Americanised as some sentences didn't sound right, for example in some places the word "sure" was used where Brits might use "although."

This book is an easy "read" and I've stuck with the series and have managed to get past the narration and just enjoy the stories. However, I do keep wishing I was listening to Richard Armitage instead!

Terrible narration

The story was ok. Reasonably paced. The narration was absolutely dreadful. I can’t face listening to any more in the series.Such a shame.

Great story. Awful narration.

Really enjoy Joy Ellis books and this was a great new series. Nearly gave up though due to the awful accents/narration!

good story as always

Nikki Gallena is an enigma. although not as old as the narrators voice portrays her, she is certainly written as much older than stated! but that is by the way i think. she is a very strong character who carries herself into this story life a lion on the prowell! won't spoil the story but needless to say it rolls along beautifully as most of Joy Ellis' stories do and its a pleasure to listen to mostly.

Average, easy to listen to.

Nothing wrong with this book, except thstcthe conversations are a bit cheesy. it is nothing special, but it was easy enough to follow and listen to.

A decent story but rather spoilt by the narration

The story was interesting but not as tense as Joy Ellis's stories usually are. I wasn't keen on the narrator, she spoke far too quickly whichever character she was reading, making too little differences between characters. I didn't feel the narrator did much for the story telling.
