He leaves his family, who within the construct of the story are also in mortal danger, without a care and proceeds to forget all about them. The very serious situation in Africa is not a suitable topic for an Alex Cross book, and all the double crossing and twists just got really tedious. I lost track of who was a villain and who wasn't. I'm about an hour from the end, and don't want to give up, but the latest events have me sighing heavily. I hope the next book is better than this or I won't be finishing this series.
The shark has well and truly been jumped in this book.
Not a good one

I’m not sure of the authors intent, but I found myself wanting Cross to get killed due to his ridiculous choices and continued willingness to put all those around him in danger. In my view, the author has turned Cross into a thoroughly annoying character.
Worst of the series

Every one of the other stories you are rooting for cross and empathise with the difficult situations he is put in. It's very easy to become a fan and respect what James Patterson has done.
This book, though for me, takes a lot of respect away for the character. I appreciate wanting to try and stretch the realms to which authors write too, but at several points, this book felt more like a lesson in what's happening in Sudan, Nigeria, and other places in Africa. Its not to say its not important to learn of these things but it did not fit thd cross universe at all, and the murders happening in Washington, felt like nothing more than a whisper to keep charchters included. That's my first struggle.
The next is with how arrogant and selfish Cross himself is. I always get a little mad at his ways of putting work first, but I believe you're meant to, and it's what makes him more human. However, in this book, it is made clear in multiple ways that Cross did not need to take this trip, and no matter how much he was threatened and others were hurt, he refused to listen. This is in spite of the fact that he is tracking someone who kills whole families that cross him.
His family, who is his whole world in it her books are not even mentioned for the majority of the book!!
It's hard to admit you don't like a part of something you love, but this is definitely a book that made me lose some of my respect for Cross and question what Patterson was trying to achieve here.
Narration is excellent and done very well throughout the whole story.
