Summary
For Dave Robicheaux, life in Louisiana is filled with haunting memories of the past - images from Vietnam, the violent streets of New Orleans, and his own troubled youth. In Crusader's Cross, a deathbed confession from an old schoolmate resurrects a story of injustice, the murder of a young woman, and a time in Robicheaux's life he has tried to forget.
Her name may or may not have been Ida Durbin. It was back in the innocent days of the 1950s when Robicheaux and his brother, Jimmie, met heron a Galveston beach. She was pretty and Jimmie fell for her hard - not knowing she was a prostitute on infamous Post Office Street, with ties to the mob. Then Ida was abducted and never seen again.

Wow
How does James Lee Burke keep producing top notch thrillers like this. Great narration too.

Great stuff as always.
Just like an old friend, the lyrical prose and the flow of the story is like music. Never boring, but always familiar.

Will Patton is a gem with a JLB story
This is my fourteenth Dave Robicheaux story and it is my second audio book read by Will Patton. For me, Will Patton's evocative Southern style, brings to life so much of the lyricism of JLB. Will Patton complements JLB, like Cletus complements Dave!
'Crusader's Cross' is a terrific tale, interweaving events from the past and present, that are both tragic and forgiving in nature. As usual, Dave and Clete find themselves in diabolically terrible situations - at one point we fear for the life of Cletus and for a good part of the book, we wince at the catastrophe Dave brings down upon himself. It is difficult not to be empathic and sympathetic to the flaws in the character of Dave Robicheaux, because it is in enabling Dave's atonement (Crusader's Cross), that JLB gives hope for the redemption of everyman - including me!.

Excellent in all ways.
JLB writes with poetic lyricism, and Will Patton captures that beautifully. He also captures the spirit of Dave Robicheaux extraordinarily well. So well in fact that I could easily believe that I was listening to Robicheaux himself.

Simply Stunning Story
James Lee Burke at his finest, great storytelling and characterisation. Dave Robicheaux at his worst and best!! Easy listening transporting you back in time and to New Iberia and the South

Poor Denouement
The way this complex novel is wrapped up appears rushed. I'm also convinced that most of the Louisiana hoods in Robichaux are interchangeable. So, on balance a good yet disappointing read. Will Patton excellent as usual!

Not my favourite Robicheaux book
I'm a huge fan of Dave Robicheaux and what I haven't listed to, I have read. This is well worth a listen but I felt it was a little bit samey and it seemed to plod over well worn ground. This is a comparative review though, if I wasn't familiar with the others in the series this would have got a straight 5 stars.
