About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

An urgent investigation into the brave new world of the microbiome and how it shapes our lives and health.

The microbiome is the missing link in modern medicine: a vast genetic universe of bacteria, yeasts, viruses and parasites that live inside us, influencing every aspect of our health, even the way we think and feel.

In this mindblowing book, scientist and surgeon James Kinross explains how the organisms that live within us have helped us evolve, shaped our biology and defined the success of our species. But just as we have discovered this delicate and complex ecosystem within us, it is being irrevocably destroyed through the globalisation of our diets and lifestyles, our addiction to antibiotics, and the destruction of our environment.

With dazzling science and fascinating stories spanning from the dawn of humankind to the current race to develop personalised healthcare, and practical advice on how to nurture your microbiome through your diet and lifestyle, this pioneering book will change the way you think about human health forever.

This is a wonderful listen. James Kinross is accessible, engaging and witty, making what is a virtually impenetrable subject with so many open questions, finally accessible! Looking forward to the next update once the world discovers more about this fascinating subject. Most highly recommended!

If you enjoy a bit of scientific reading beyond the ‘pop science’ books that seem to thrive in abundance these days, then this one is for you.

Eye-opening, with cited studies to back it up, this book feels like you’re standing on the precipice of a new path to longevity and good health.

Essential for our health

As a GP, and a nerd, I have been studying the microbiome for some time. My emphasis on managing my patients is trying to move away from how ‘modern’ medicine practices. We have more control over our own health than we believe, and need to take things back to things like our microbiomes, sleep, exercise and learning our emotions.

This book is an excellent discussion about the topic and I highly recommend it. Thanks.

Everyone and every doctor needs to read/ listen to this

I loved this book, not only is it interesting CPD for me as a Biomedical Scientist but it made me think about how I might be interacting with or overlooking my microbiome in everyday life too. As a parent, woman, human and dog owner! It was lovely to hear it read by the author who has a very nice voice and I enjoyed the jokes along the way. This is clearly a passion for the author and he brings alive the interest and importance of looking after our microbiomes, antibiotics and the environment. I was bereft when it finished, may listen again! I’ve recommended it to lots of people at work and other friends.

See... Dark does matter! Our knowledge of ourselves and the relationship with our inner self is just blossoming, the science evolving and maybe it will mean a better balance in how we care and medicate (self and professional). The status quo of our western diet and existence is not the healthiest and a deeper understanding of our inner flora and fauna, could be the 'shove' we all need to help our microbiome gardens flourish to benefit all? 🐰

Extraordinary

Technical at times but great sorry with referencing and application to life, helping explain why medicine is so imprecise for all the reasons we are still not aware of. A great introduction to the importance of everything matters in medicine and hopefully ushering in a new era of learning, understanding and hopefully therapy.
