About this listen

A stormsinger and pirate hunter join forces against a deathless pirate lord in this swashbuckling Jacobean adventure on the high-seas—launching the Winter Sea series, full of magic, betrayal, redemption and fearsome women, for fans of Adrienne Young, R. J. Barker and Naomi Novik

Mary Firth is a Stormsinger: a woman whose voice can still hurricanes and shatter armadas. Faced with servitude to a deathless pirate lord, Mary offers her skills to his arch-rival in exchange for protection—and, more importantly, his help in sending the pirate to a watery grave.

But Mary's dreams are dark and full of ghistings, spectral creatures who inhabit the ancient forests of her homeland and the figureheads of ships. Her new ally has his own vendetta, complete with revenge and a lost fleet, locked in the eternal ice of the far north, and disgraced pirate hunter Samuel Rosser is close on their trail. Samuel will stop at nothing to restore his good name and claim the only thing that stands between himself and madness: a talisman stolen by Mary herself. Finally, driven into the eternal ice at the limits of their world, Mary and Samuel must choose their loyalties and battle forces older and more powerful than the pirates who would make them slaves.

Come sail the winter sea, for action-packed, high-stakes adventures, rich characterization and epic plots full of intrigue and betrayal.

This book Dark Water Daughter, is the first in the series The Winter Sea. Here we meet Mary, Charles, Samuel and Ben. How can the lives of a stormsinger, a highwayman, a pirate chaser and a naval officer intertwine?

HM Long introduces us to political intrigue and manipulating monarchs and a magic system that can main, that can kill, that can track and trace, magic that can do anything.

The book was narrated by the indomitable duo of Moira Quirk and Samuel Roukin and was told from 2 pov's, Mary's and Sam's. I loved Mary and Samuel and liked finding out their back story: Charles was a bit flighty and non too honest for my liking: Ben, humm, Ben I didn't like, but that's how he's been written. He does get better towards the end of the book, but I'm reserving judgement.

I was sorry when the story came to an end and have purchased Black Tide Son to carry on the story. If you like swashbuckling pirates, navy and sea fights, magic and a great supporting cast, this book is for you. Give it a try.

I didn't really care for this; I didn't find either of the protagonists engaging - neither of them really drives the plot so much as they react to things going on around them. The secondary characters are actually more interesting because of this, because they're the ones pushing things forward. I found the male main character especially tedious due to his moping over his magical abilities, which he views as a curse, but there's a definite "cursed with awesome" vibe to him. Despite a good start, the book is halfway through before the overall shape of the plot becomes apparent, and by that point I just didn't care anymore. The story also frequently references fictional textbooks at the beginning of chapters. This is terribly clunky information dumping and telegraphs what any given chapter will be about.
