About this listen

George Furnace, flight instructor at Baston Aero Club, dies instantly when his plane crashes into the English countryside. People who knew him are baffled - Furnace was a first-rate pilot, and the plane was in perfect condition - and the inquest records a verdict of death by misadventure.

An Australian visitor to the aero club, Edwin Marriott, Bishop of Cootamundra, suspects that the true story is more complicated. Could this be a dramatic suicide - or even murder? Together with Inspector Bray of Scotland Yard, the intrepid bishop must uncover a cunning criminal scheme.

The setting in the early days of flying was as interesring as the plot and characters. i hope I can find the rest of Sprigg's detective stories

Enjoyable and unusual story

Clever, twisting plot set at a flying club in the 1930s. The background of flying feels really authentic. The story is definitely plot driven. The characters are there to suit the plot but are interesting (though not great) for all that.
I recommend this if you enjoy a good puzzle to which you can see no resolution...... I can see why Dorothy Sayers enthused about this young writer. I am now going to check if Audible has recorded any others.

Wonderful narration matching the energetic, quirky, inventive plot with its wit and verve. Some highly entertaining characters and nicely realised dialogue. Thank goodness this little gem has been rescued to such good effect.. Its young author was quite a comet- a philosopher poet (under the name Caudwell) as well as an incisive mystery writer. More please!

I enjoyed this story, as I like the old fashioned style of "who dunnit". However, my preference is more for the Agatha Christie style, where you get to know the characters, rather than this sort where you're following all the clues. Having said that, this is good fun to listen to with some twists and turns and even a little romance. Well worth a listen.

Very factual
