Mike Mackenzie is a self-made man with too much time on his hands and a bit of the devil in his soul. He is looking for something to liven up the days and perhaps give new meaning to his existence.

Have read and listened to all the Rebus books and this is one of my fist listens to a non Rebus Rankin. Absolutley brilliant story with another fantastic performance.

Another great book by Ian Rankin. Can’t wait to listen to my next one. Love James Macpherson’s voice. He draws you in and I don’t think the audio books would e as good with someone else doing the various voices

My title refers to the Steve McQueen original, not the remake that I heard had been made.
So much so it's a little surprising that mentions of plagiarism didn't arise when published. The whole "Bored Rich Guy wants to play at gangsters" thing...
Overall it tries just too hard to find a maxing out of twists - to the point that it became annoying.
And at its finale I was glad to forget it altogether.
And get on with the next in my revisiting of the Rankin universe in audio. Previous visitings via hardback and later on by Kindle had omitted this one, maybe because it hadn't been written then? Unsure. I rather doubt if it'll get a second listen.

As always Rankin is a great story teller. Have enjoyed his works for years. Love his descriptive empathy with Edinburgh. Not been there for 30 years but have walked down every street with him. Heart in mouth at times, another exciting tale told.

This had me wanting to keep listening every chance I got. It was great to hear another story parallel to the Rebus universe - I enjoyed the cheeky reference to "you know who" - but with different characters. The only downside was the fact the audiobook wasn't properly divided up into chapters. It always makes it much harder to stop at a convenient point.

As a big Rebus fan, I thought that this was a little wanting in the reality stakes..

I'm not sure that I enjoyed this as much as usual.
