About this listen

The Earth on the brink of destruction. A new world of magic and danger! Can Phil stay alive long enough to enjoy his escape from destruction?

The world is ending.

Yet in the midst of its destruction, there's Haven, an escape from the pending doom. Unfortunately, this doesn't include Phil. After losing his sister, he's miserable and just looking to survive. When he illegally finds a way into Haven, he discovers it's a world that's unlike anything he's seen before. Haven is alluring and constantly changing. But it's also dangerous, and Phil soon realizes there's someone who wants him dead.

In exchange for his safety, Phil makes a bargain to retrieve a magical item located somewhere in a deep forgotten forest. But time is running out, and if he doesn't find it in time, his death is guaranteed.

How brilliantly the first book lays out the new world of Haven and the characters of the series narration was very good

As is said, i love the story.

I enjoied following the development of the MC through the book, and the story in general left med hungery for more.

I was not a huge fan of the narrator, mainly because All the female characters sounds Like they have a cold. Through after lisentning a few hours i kinda got used to it.

All in All I look forward to the the rest of the series and will recomend to anyone who needs a little fantasy in there life.

Love the story! The narrator...not so much.

As far as the narration of this book goes it was great, I really enjoyed it and would happily listen to more.
As for the book itself...
Well I really did enjoy this book, it drew me in from the get go and as a first book in a series it left me eager for the next. It has a great consent and the main character is quite likeable.
HOWEVER, while I was left wanting more (which typically is a good thing in a series) I wanted too much. There were so many opportunities to expand in this new world that has been created by the author and I wanted to know all about it. I think a bit more context of who others are, what their world is and what has happened was needed. The whole book glossed over so many golden opportunities to enrich the story with details of this new and different world in which we are exploring in this book. It made the book feel a bit rushed and somewhat bland when I thought about all that lost potential. I am hoping there is a lot more exploration of these things in the next book. There was a full world being created which much have taken a whole lot of work and I appreciate it.

Good but something missing

I was provided a copyof this book freeof charge by the Narrator in exchange for an honest review.

This was my first book by Timothy McGowen and I'm pleased to say it won't be my last.

What started as a really morose and depressing tale never really rose above this was was a 'nice' change for a pseudo-Litrpg book as generally they're either anime-style ultraviolence of comical but this maintained a sense of a man who was struggling with both a sense of loss and hope. The story itself is very much a tale of one man and his droid (copyright Mastertronic 1985) and the relationship that grows between this unlikely matchup is really interesting and enjoyable. Never did I feel that the golem was overpowered (as it would be easy to do) nor is Phil the whiny type that often arises in this type of tale. In fact, the characters were very likeable and all given a real sense of individuality by the narration that kept my interest throughout.

While I did enjoy the story, and look forward to the next, there are a few problems. For one the action isn;t particularly exciting and feels a little bland, even the final battle of the book fell flat for me. The other niggle is that there is some annoying repetition of terms. One particular sentence had the words Die or Died repeated 4 times? A minor thing but I had to rewind and check if I was mishearing.

These small issues aren't enough to dissuade me though as the characters are interesting and the world and magic system pretty original so I am certainly looking forward to the next in the series.

A very promising start.
