About this listen

L.A. Confidential for the 21st Century: a gripping, must-hear thriller about Hollywood's corrupt factory of dreams and the woman determined to burn it down.

In Hollywood, nobody talks. But everybody whispers.

Welcome to Mae Pruett's LA. A 'black-bag' publicist at one of Hollywood's most powerful crisis PR firms, Mae's job isn't to get good news out, it's to keep the bad news in and contain the scandals. But just as she starts to question her job and life choices, her boss is gunned down in front of the Beverly Hills Hotel, and everything changes.

Investigating with the help of an ex-boyfriend, Mae dives headlong into a neon joyride through the jungle of contemporary Hollywood. Pitted against the twisted system she's worked so hard to perpetuate, she's desperately fighting for redemption, and her life.

Excellent narration. Fantastic noir thriller. This is a dark, disturbing read. Compelling page turner. Wow.

Modern noir at its best.

Got this because it was a top recommendation from The Times. This story is bursting with LA attitude and fierce cynicism; a ‘21st Century Raymond Chandler’ feel and I don’t use that term lightly. Worth buying for the fantastic dialogue & prose. Author is a top TV writer and it shows. It’s infused with style & wit. Some lines I wanted to stop and just write down so I could remember them. Utterly compelling and very enjoyable!

Loved it

Gave up after 3 hours. Grating voice of narrator. Story strung out interminably. Disappointed as it had a great review in times. Just got bored and disinterested. Not for me!!

Hated narrators voice

Liked the characters and plot. Ending was a bit of a let down. Perhaps setting it up for a sequel?

Enjoyed up to a point

A modern Raymond Chamdler - the clear and cool description of life as a “problem solver” for LA’s power elite - is both so forever and so now.

So very very LA today.

Awful narration, cheesy overacted American accents. Story wasn’t too bad but nothing to shout about

Story good, narrating bad

Not sure why all the good reviews - it’s very cliched with very average dialogue. I’m a huge fan of Raymond chandler - and this isn’t even close to it.

Feels like subpar tv episode

The hero. The villain. They think. They are scared. They are brave. They are in Hollywood. She thinks this. She thinks that. He thinks this, He thinks she thinks that. They are in a car. They are driving. She is thinking.
Not seeing how this book was written I am unsure if the narration was following the writing, or a director insisted on this narration style. . Single. Sentence. Had to be broken down into staccato phrases that made listening to it a chore.
A good review of the book in the NYT got me to buy the Audible version, but it was so DRAMATIC that I was overwhelmed with disinterest by the time I got into the plot.
So I am not sure if the story was any good or not.

They. Stop. And start. Almost every. Sentence.

Not much light and shade here and the format grinds. Characters ok. Story just too dark. Over long.

Repetitively grim
