About this listen
June 1144. When the naked corpse of an unknown man is discovered and the Prince of Powys’ messenger fails to reach Earl Robert of Gloucester, Bradecote, Catchpoll and Walkelin head to Wales to confirm his identity, and piece together evidence that the dead man deserved a noose rather than a dagger. Retracing his steps leads them to a manor with a sarcastic lord, a neglected wife, a bitter mother and a fevered brother, all amidst folk who do not want the truth uncovered. The lord sheriff’s men have to unravel a knot where the law and justice seem to be in opposition.

Such a satisfying conclusion
As ever a strong well crafted mystery dragging me firmly into the 12th century.
I’m loving this series so much I’m dreading it coming to an end…
Yet I can’t stop binging.

Medieval Cosy Crime
There is nothing at all I wrong with Jonathan Keeble’s narration, but when you have one set of wonderful character voices in your head from previous books then you’re suddenly confronted with a different set it is rather disturbing. I enjoyed the story, as always Hawkswood’s research is carefully woven through and is never intrusive, whilst her 3 main characters are a delight. I will buy the next one but have to say the previous narrator’s silky voice is a sad loss.
