Summary
From Chris Brookmyre, winner of the Theakstons and McIllvanney awards for Black Widow, comes a standalone psychological thriller full of twists, lies and betrayal.
One family, two holidays, one devastating secret. To new nanny Amanda, the Temple family seem to have it all: the former actress; the famous professor; their three successful grown-up children.
But like any family, beneath the smiles and hugs there lurks far darker emotions.
Sixteen years earlier, little Niamh Temple died while they were on holiday in Portugal. Now, as Amanda joins the family for a reunion at their seaside villa, she begins to suspect one of them might be hiding something terrible.... And suspicion is a dangerous thing.

Excellent
Gosh I wasn't expecting to like this book as much as I did. It was riveting with a couple of good twists near the end.

Absolutely Brilliant
I read this in 2019 but, although I knew I had enjoyed it, I had forgotten a lot of the plot. Christopher Brookmyre has never written a bad book, and this doesn't disappoint. The story is wonderful. poignant, empathic, gripping, sad, with a well thought out plot and ending. Cathleen McCarron's narration is superb and really enhances the story.
This works as a stand alone novel, but also nicely includes a nod to another well loved Brookmyre character.
I can't praise this highly enough. I'm looking forward to listening to it again in a couple of years time.

Interesting fare
All my dates with Chris Brookmyre up until this point have been chaperoned by Jack Parlabane, so it was with some trepidation that I ventured into Fallen Angel. The story was very clever, very sad and encompassed eloquently expressed emotion. I must, at this juncture, give a standing ovation to Cathleen McCarron for her outstanding voice performance. She slipped easily between the different accents and I was thoroughly impressed. Whilst Jack Parlabane did make a cameo appearance, I did miss his dark humour and sarcastic, biting tongue. But obviously it is completely unreasonable of me to expect Mr Brookmyre to restrict his writing to one character. This foray into a different kind of thriller was very good and I enjoyed it. I just think I'm struggling with the concept of Chris Brookmyre without Jack Parlabane, it's a bit like when Take That lost Robbie Williams, only with less teenage, female hysteria. I intend to listen to more of Mr Brookmyre's Parlabaneless work and I'm sure once my feelings of loss have worn off, I'll appreciate it for the genuinely good writing, character led stories of excellence to which we have become accustomed. I do recommend you listen to Fallen Angel straight away because you can always thank me later.

Slightly surprised by other negative reviews
I thought that this was an interesting book and despite the very appalled reviews preceding mine I thought the subject matter was interesting and handled well. Overall I do like Brookmyre’s stuff with some exceptions so if you are like me then I would give it a go and disregard earlier reviews

Good plot, awful narration
The plot was really interesting but the book was totally spoilt by the god awful accents and ponderous reading by the narrator. Sad as bet it would have been better to read it in paper form.

Very Clever!
Loved it even though some of it was hard to listen to! Fantastic to see other characters brought in from other books! I did guess the ending with 2+ hours to go but it not often I find a book that throws me. I think I've now read most of Chris Brookmyre's books and he's definitely a firm favourite! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for more books in the future! worth every credit! I'm actually sad there's no more for now!
