I loved the whole book!
I loved all the descriptions of South Africa and all the characters. Im a massive Deon Meyer fan now and will defnitely listen to the rest of his books now.
Also the reader’s accents are excellent!

I had the privilege to be at the launch of Fever. I read the book more than two years ago and absolutely loved it. When I discovered that it was on audible, I simply had to get it.

Fever (the book) has been in the top five of my most favourite books since it was first published, now, having listened to the audible, during lockdown, it's brought home just how serious a pandemic like coronavirus can be.

Deon Meyer is a prophet - who could imagine that when it was first published, we'd be living through this nightmare. It sent shivers down my spine as I realised how much he's managed to foresee during a coronavirus pandemic.

Jennifer Woodburn, Peter Noble are two truly fantastic narrators. They managed to convey all the characters so that I felt I was living with them in Amanzi.

Bravo! Deon Meyer, Peter Noble and Jennifer Woodburn. I wish I had a loud-hailer so that I could persuade me people to listen to this extraordinary story of courage.

Superbly written - tense, beautifully described and well researched although I shouldn’t expect anything less from this author. I lived in South Africa for 11 years and visited most of the places mentioned in the book. It drew me in and took me back but my visualised visit was as though I were returning after this apocalyptic event and experiencing it for myself. The description of the terrain and main location in the book were so vivid that when I visited on Google maps it was as though I already knew the outlay.

The events of the story were truly frightening, this is the kind of thing that terrifies me, not the usual horror type fiction. It had me on the edge of my seat and desperate to know what lay ahead.

Mr Meyer’s passion for his country shines through too and he captures so many of the little details of South Africa and it’s broad range of inhabitants. It made me want to return to spend more time there again.

The narration on Audible was first class! In fact for me this was the best way to access this book. It came alive and I heard the voices of the people I lived among for many years.

I am sure I will listen again as it takes me on a geographical joy ride that brings the people and places of South Africa alive. It is far more than just a good story.

Post-apocalypse is no means my genre. But Deon Meyer is such a good writer I made an exception. It's not futuristic or fantasy, it's down-to-earth and real. How the remaining people choose to survive after most of our species is killed by a virus: What kind of societies come about, the politics, the security issues, the systems of providing basic needs. Being Meyer though, it has well-developed characters, and is fast-paced with mystery and intrigue, anguish and humour thrown in. The narrators are very good, and to a South African, authentic. Americans, who seem to have had difficulty even with Saul Reichlin, had better listen to a sample first.

what an amazing and current story, captivating. the narration however jumped from Mafia to Rab C Nesbitt to 007. A bit annoying but great book all the same..

Felt a little jarring at first with the South African accents and the story felt a little dry. I was so wrong, a fantastic performance, riveting storyline and rich characters. Loved it.

A massive grower

A good addition to the literary post-apocalyptic genre, by which I mean a thoughtful speculative novel on what happens after civilisation as we know it is finished, NOT one of the droves of zombie books that unfortunately swamp the post-apocalyptic category/tag. I’ve read and listened to a lot of books this genre, largely because it is interesting to explore what authors think people would do in such circumstances, but this was the first I’ve read set in South Africa; this was a large part of my enjoying the book, the difference in culture and setting.

A note on the narrators: a previous reviewer stated that Peter Noble had a hard time hanging on to accents, while this is true of a couple characters, in all he did a fine job and was a pleasure to listen to. This is the first I’d heard of Jennifer Woodburn and was hesitant to try the book as there was no sample of her on audible; I was pleasantly surprised and wouldn’t hesitate to listen to her again.

Would recommend this book and know I will end up re-listening to it in the future.
