About this listen

It’s all Tinkler’s fault. If it weren’t for his obsession with the 1970s band Black Dog, none of this would have happened.

The members of Black Dog performed an infamous publicity stunt on Halig Island: they burned a million dollars on an enormous bonfire. But the stunt backfired, splitting the band for good and increasing the value of their final, recalled album tenfold.

The Vinyl Detective and Nevada accept the challenge to hunt a copy down for Tinkler but soon realize that the search is going to be their most dangerous yet. Narrowly avoiding a killing spree, negotiating deranged fans and being pursued by hack celebrity Stinky Stamner, they discover that perhaps all was not as it seemed on Halig Island - and that in the embers of that fire are clues of a motive for murder....

The fourth book in the hilarious and enthralling Vinyl Detective mystery series.

This series is enjoyable, but the stilted speech of the narrator is distracting and slows down the pace too much.

Enjoyable story - stilted narration

Our nameless Hero returns again to track down yet another rare record, this time for Tinker. Our Hero finds himself and his companions in danger of the island of Helig, the chosen getaway for the disbanded Black Dog a folk/rock band from the late 60’s early 70’s, famous for burning a Million Dollars. Will he find a copy of rare flip back version of Wisht or die trying.

Another Vinyl classic

All of the Vinyl Detective stories are excellent, without question, despite the few negative reviews. If you are into all action thrillers you will be disappointed, these are subtle, and clever

Narrator of book 1 was better, shame he wasn't kept on.

Like many others, I bought these on a sale as my interest was not peaked enough otherwise, but I love them and have now bought the whole series, very glad I did

A truly excellent niche market, I applaud Andrew Cartmel for these stories

Being a little quirky helps

This is my favorite of this series, with its oddly engaging old rockers and folk legends, it's island locals and psychopathic artists. A joy to read and also listen to, in Finlay Robertson's sardonic and mellow tones. A love of music and a deep understanding of OCD collectors underpins the intricate plot with warmth and a lot of laughs.

Folk folks and demon pigs.

of the previous books, great yarn which leaves no loose ends and isn’t overly complicated, look forward to more adventures with the Vinyl Detective! PS Pity the island isn’t real but suppose a couple of places in UK spring to mind.

Carrying on the tradition.....

Well paced and love the characters. I miss the tech of the earlier stories- but this one rattles along :) Good play on known events - Page and Drummond escapades are immeadiately brought to mind.

A few niggles - Max Shearwater being a pun on Manc Shearwater grates after a while - and the idea of a much larger version of Lindesfarne of the coastal port of Sunderland doesn't make sense from a geographical point of view - which I found made the situation a little unbelievable.

Nice story - a little incredulous in places

Love the Vinyl Detective series, fabulous plots with well established characters who remain consistent throughout to their personalities.

Can't wait for the next one

My husband and I have listened to all of Andrew Cartmel's books about the Vinyl Detective and this one is the best so far. We both hope there are more to come. Well written and well read.

They keep getting better

Possibly the best of the 4 so far as I hadn’t guessed the “who was behind everything” by half way through. However, this one doesn’t have whispersync with kindle making it harder to get through

Whispersync would have made this easier

I am enjoying this series very much. I absolutely love the characters who become more real and padded with each story. Keep up the good work.

Great and original
