About this listen

In the village of Cronchie, a wealthy family are found brutally murdered. The Devil Stone, an heirloom rumoured to bring death if removed from their home, is the only thing stolen. The key suspects are known satanists. But when the investigating officer disappears, DCI Christine Caplan is pulled in to investigate.

Caplan knows she is being punished for a minor misdemeanour when she is seconded to the Highlands, but she’s confident she can quickly solve the murders and return home to her fractious family. But as she closes in on the truth, it is suddenly her life, not her career, that is in danger.

I enjoyed this book initially. I normally love Kristin Atherton as a narrator, but didn’t really enjoy many of the Scottish accents in this one - many felt a bit hammed up. I was able to overlook that as the story was initially compelling, but about two thirds through it suddenly started jumping about all over the place, as if it was missing elements, to the extent that I thought I’d accidentally skipped bits or got an abridged version. It became very confusing, and I’m normally absolutely fine with multi-character complex plots. The pace slowed dramatically at the end, summing up everything at a leisurely pace, that the author wouldn’t have had to do if they hadn’t been on fast forward for the preceding few chapters. That last third spoiled the whole book for me and I’m torn as to whether to listen to anything else by this author.

Started well, but lost it

Have really enjoyed all of Caro Ramsay’s previous books and this is just as good. Great start to a new series. Very well read.

Brilliant listen/read

Usually love Kristen Atherton but found most voices creepy or comical so couldn't finish

Ok but not great

A very rushed ending. It was sometimes difficult to work out which character was 'speaking '.

Good description of Scottish scenery

An intriguing and well-crafted murder mystery with a believable and complex detective. I look forward to the next instalment.

Absorbing

The narration was first class, kept me wanting more and so it was very hard to put down. Can't wait for more books from this author.

It was all good.

Regardless of the quality of the book itself, you cannot fail to be impressed by the narrator Kristin Atherton. Her performance is out of this world and it's hard to believe all the different voices/accents are created by the same person. Miriam Margolyes was, until now, top of my narrators list but I have to say that Ms Atherton is giving her a run for her money here! She is simply superb.

As for the book itself... I was captivated right to the very end. As with many a novel, some scenes were a little far-fetched but I guess that's just the nature of the beast. All in all, if you like crime dramas, I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy this one.

The best narration I've ever heard!

The storyline mimics other crime stories. Not very deep, still amusing to wile away the time while ironing.

Great holiday read or audio book.
