About this listen
Meet Simon Fenchurch, detective inspector working the Met’s East London beat. Honest and funny but damaged, he’s working a case that could give him answers to his deepest trauma....
The body of a young woman is found on the streets of East London, in the shadow of the City’s gleaming towers. No ID on her, just hard-earned cash. But there is no doubting the ferocity of the attack.
DI Simon Fenchurch takes charge, but as his team tries to identify her and piece together her murder, they’re faced with cruel indifference at every turn—nobody cares about yet another dead sex worker.
To Fenchurch, however, the victim could just as easily be Chloe, his daughter, abducted from outside his home and still missing 10 years on, whose memory still haunts his days and nights, his burning obsession having killed his marriage.
When a second body is found, Fenchurch must peel back the grimy layers shrouding the London sex trade, confronting his own traumatic past while racing to undo a scheme larger, more complex and more evil than anything he could possibly have imagined.
For fans of Ian Rankin, Mark Billingham, Alex Smith, and JD Kirk, The Hope That Kills is the novel that introduced listeners to troubled Detective Simon Fenchurch.

Enjoyed it though it took a while to get going
Found it a bit slow to start with and I found myself easily distracted from the story. About 2 hours in I became gripped. Very well read.

Gritty yet emotional
A hard-hitting story, with believable characters, perfectly brought to life. Looking forward to the next one already.

Amazing read
just finished fenchurch audible book 1 another great read / listen from Ed 😁.
Looking forward to the development of characters and story.
Angus did a cracking job Narrating, I was a little worried with it being based in London as I'm so used to Angus playing the Scottish Detective lead but he really pulled it off with fenchurch it was a complete opposite to his normal characters and loved the change to the London lingo lol
I've read all of Eds books and most books Narrated by Angus from other talented authors. Ed and Angus make a great team you won't be disappointed it's an edge of the seat read and looking forward to listening to the other books in the series when released 😁

Great Start to a Series
It's hard to pull off all the voices needed in an audio book and make them sound convincing but after a shaky start Angus King finally got in his stride and nailed it. The story is complex and full on making it a great start to a new series and DI Fenchurch is a really believable character. In my opinion well worth a credit. Now for book 2.

Bit meandering
Very odd ending! Angus as usual superb storyteller. It said in the blurb the inspector was funny but no humour in this. Unlike jack logan jd Kirk’s books. Shame I couldn’t tell one character from another had to listen few times to follow.

Mmmm..not sure
This audiobook has me in two minds. It certainly benefits from having Angus King narrating it though I found it very difficult to tune into the (for me) strange accents and subsequently know who was 'talking'. The ending didn't seem to tie up everything in the storyline, especially who all the men were - seemed to be 'hundreds' all moaning unless I've misheard. I listened back a number of times and am none the wiser. I suspect that all will be revealed in a future book - so annoying!
All the domestic stuff is so wearying, the final 20 minutes or so were unnecessary and took a crime / detective book into the realms of a romantic novel. Ed James isn't alone in adopting this trait which doesn't make it less unwanted.
I don't like a book leaving loose ends which are tied up in the next in the series.

Good story, great narration
Found the story a bit slow, however saved by the excellent narration of Angus King that kept me going. Was surprisingly great at the English accents and the Welsh accent, and of course his own Scottish variations are brilliant.

Great
Just finished and whilst the story was a little far fetched (I hope) what a joy it is to listen to Angus King. Looking forward to seeing how the main characters develop as the series progresses
