About this listen

A cold case investigation into the disappearance of 13-year-olds, Christopher Deeks and Ewan Birley, who vanished in the early '90s, opens up old wounds, old lies and a botched investigation into the very heart of the church. DI Alan Williams and the Major Investigation Team find themselves chasing a murderer while trying to contain the backlash of an early release program, designed to help the prisons cope with the COVID-19 outbreak. It's clear the government have released the wrong men. Pure evil walks the streets.

This is the first audio book I have ever listened to. it was a gift, and I enjoyed listening as I drove a 5-day car journey across Europe. The narrator does an excellent job of bringing the characters to life. There are very many people in the story and so I was very glad that Richard Linford gives a specific, and different, accent to each one. If I had been reading the book, rather than listening, I would have had to leaf back several times to refresh my memory of who is who and who does what.
If I had a critique of the story, it would be just that there are too many people in it to be able to keep everyone separate in one's memory. I did not personally like how gory it all gets at times : there are (very) many murders - I was shocked at the first of these and fought NOT to hear all the details, which made my car swerve alarmingly! The gore almost made me stop listening, but I persevered and in the end enjoyed the story for what it is : a romp, a stomping, a charging through one section of criminal underworld. An eye (and ear) opener indeed.
There are several moments which remain in my memory : a chapter on what it is to lose your Christian faith, a reminder that it is all too easy to step aside from the Way; and a spotlight on a minor character in an Old People's Home, which poses the question of whether we, as a society, have latched onto the best and most honouring way of looking after our seniors as they grow helpless towards their lives' end.
There are also some beautiful moments of description - a wonderful break from the seedy and unhappy world most of the characters inhabit.
So - although the whole criminal framework of "Good, Bad and Pure Evil" is lightyears away from what I have experienced in my own life, I enjoyed this book very much. Richard Linford has worked incredibly hard and thoroughly to make listening a pleasure and deserves recognition for his extraordinary talent at accents and characterisation.
