About this listen

You can’t hide in an RPG forever.

Eighteen years ago, Tom, a barber college student, got trapped in the Monsters, Maces and Magic game world as Josiah the thief.

The first two adventures saw all of Tom’s party members, also trapped within the game world, perish within the fetid depths of the Dark Heart Swamp. His subsequent stint adventuring with NPCs proved short lived. He preferred survival.

Over time, Tom became Josiah, adopting a life blending in with the game world’s NPCs. He gave up advancing as a thief, trained as a lay healer, and works as a barber, cutting hair, pulling teeth, lancing boils, and functioning as a low-level operative within the local thieves’ guild.

But life, even one lived as a faux NPC, can get interesting. Such happens when a young half-goblin thief named Gurk shows up in Josiah’s shop, looking for information. Little did the pair know that the unobtrusive barber shop would become a focal point in a brewing guild war.

Great shorter story

I love that the author did not find the need to draw out the shorter story. I am not a role playing game person, and yet I really enjoy these stories. The author at times gives small definitions/player guidelines, So that it’s easy to understand the rules that govern the world the characters find themselves in.

Arthur is amazing and I hope he stays for any future additions to the series

Length

It is a very short compared to the previous books like betrayal so I finished it a lot quicker which I don’t like I prefer longer books and this one is kind of like a short story rather than a novel

Side quest

This is a short side quest revolving around the (probably) evil dagger that the group acquired. It introduces some new characters and a possible thieves' guild war. Some of the characters from the previous two books do appear in this one but are almost relegated to spectators.

This series still has me captivated and I will continue with it.

I received a free copy of this book and chose to write a review.

Very short book

I did find this book rather short and lacking in story content. Also it does seem a bit controversial regarding the barber and his thoughts an actions towards the main party. It would greatly benefit to expand the story and barber's motivation and actions. Knowing the group being players not NPCs but avoiding interaction with them seems controversial considering being stuck in this dimension alone.
