About this listen

Newly married and having recently taken over the management of a hotel in Honolulu, a former writer is drawn into the lives of his guests and the distinctive customs and rhythms of the distant island.

As witness to the many contrasting chronicles of the hotel's characters, he ultimately returns to writing once again. The result is this novel in 80 distinct episodes, a Chaucerian sequence of strange pilgrims and islanders confronting each other and their fates in the rooms of the seedy hotel.

I thought this a brilliant novel, being funny, surprising, raw and real. I'm not always a fan of George Guidall as a narrator but in this case he is a great match for the feel and tone of the book; he reads it beautifully and the book speaks to you like you're experiencing it with the protagonist. I love Paul Theroux's novels and travel writings and, in audio book form, some of those works are diminished by ineffectual or uninterested narrators or production. This version is one of those which embraces the feelings, the nuances, the sharpness, the kindness, the humour, the intent, and reveals the novel to you.
