Summary

  • The first doctor-written guide to becoming a dad
  • Combines the medical knowledge of a health-care professional with real-life experience
  • Step-by-step - from conception to caring for your newborn baby
  • Honest, humorous and engaging, this book answers the questions you've been too afraid to ask

At this crucial life moment, knowledge is power, but you probably know less than you think: what's a cervix? Can we still have sex? Why's the midwife doing that? How do I make up a bottle, and is that poo normal? Dad's role is more important than you might ever have imagined, so what can you do to help?

"I hope that as a doctor and a new dad, I will go some way towards answering those 'man questions' that never quite make it to the pub, locker room, water cooler or any other locations where men might find themselves having meaningful chats with another guy. Think of this as a man hug in what is a potentially treacherous world of terminology, hormones, social change, sleep deprivation and finally dirty nappies with tiny feet attached." (Oscar Duke)

Enlightening. Short and to the point.

My nerves are slightly picking up I must say. 3 months in now, but this book opened the doors to a lot of questions I had already begun looking for the answers to and helped put me at ease.

Dr Duke has nailed it with this book!

Loved every minute. Managed to smash this out while working and driving between jobs. Having it as a audible version, was incredible, as I really was dreading reading the numerous books my partner had bought me in preparation. I really believe this has informed me and made me alot more prepared for what's to come.

very informative and easy listening

Oscar has a nice voice to listen to, which I what I've struggled with in many of these baby books. this one was easy to listen to, very informative and I feel I've retained some of it.

finally a good Dad book!

I started listening to several Dad books and stopped them all as I felt a little patronised. it was like being a new dad automatically meant you had to fit with "lad" culture. This book however is entertaining and supremely informative without talking down to you. just a great listen full stop.

So good, very informative and emotional

Thank you doctor!

The book describes different stages of the pregnancy and beyond and the physical processes happening in the body as doctor and dad.
As a doctor author gives load of details and busts myths and as a dad he describes his own often emotional experience

Unlike random bloggers you can trust the real NHS doctor

Excellent

As a first time father to be, I had very little clue as to what to expect. I’ve flicked through my other half’s books and found them either extremely tedious or written from a women’s perspective and difficult to relate to.

This book however is very well written/ narrated, in an informative and relaxed way. It’s a must have for any new dad. It’s made me feel a lot more confident as to whats to come and how to deal with it. I will be buying a hard copy for reference. Thank you.

Very informative

A very well balanced book. Some technical, some emotional and some humility to boot. Dr Oscar is very reassuring in every chapter. As a naive father to be, this book ticked off all of the important thing’s without any of the fussy bits. A very enjoyable listen.

Exactly what I was looking for

With my first baby just around the corner, I had no idea where to start with ‘baby reading’ and generally educating myself.

This audio book has been an absolute unexpected gem.
Well written, easy to follow, really informative and all underpinned with a reassuring humour to it.

Would recommend to any expectant father.

Really helpful and relatable

Brilliant book that I listened to throughout my wife’s pregnancy, it was really helpful with advice and presented it both from a serious and also humorous way at times which made it very engaging. It was really relatable as it’s written by a dad going through the same motions but also a doctor who could explain things so I was more clued up than my wife was by the time our baby girl arrived. Definitely recommend for any father to be.
