Summary

From the globally best-selling author of Cast Iron, Coffin Road and The Blackhouse, an explosive new thriller set in the Outer Hebrides.

Husband and wife Niamh and Ruairidh Macfarlane co-own Ranish Tweed: a Hebridean company that weaves its own special variety of Harris cloth, which has become a sought-after brand in the world of high fashion. But when Niamh learns of Ruairidh's affair with Russian designer Irina Vetrov, then witnesses the pair killed by a car bomb in Paris, her life is left in ruins.

Along with her husband's remains, she returns home to the Isle of Lewis bereft. The Paris police have ruled out terrorism and ruled in murder - making Niamh the prime suspect, along with Irina's missing husband, Georgy. And so French Detective Sylvie Braque is sent to the island to look into Niamh's past, unaware of the dangers that await her.

As Braque digs deeper into the couple's history, Niamh herself replays her life with Ruiairidh, searching her memory for those whose grievances might have led to murder. And with each layer revealed and every unexpected twist uncovered, the two women find themselves drawn inexorably closer to a killer who will not turn back.

Boring

A tedious story, the writing is self-conciously over stylised. It is as if the author is trying hard to sound, well, like an author but failing. The characters and story are unengaging and after trying for a couple of hours I simply turned off.

Good, but not great.

If you could sum up I'll Keep You Safe in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, surprising, disappointing

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

As always I really like how Peter May sets the scene, both with the characters but also the locations. He gives the characters a personality, not always likeable, but always believable. I am not usually one for descriptions of scenery or weather, but there never seems to be a wasted word and I read it all rather that skipping the 'boring' bits.

What about Anna Murray and Peter Forbes ’s performance did you like?

I LOVE Peter Forbes. His lovely Scottish accent gives the story an authentic feel. He is also really good with other accents, french in this story. Spot on. I'm afraid I wasn't such a fan of Anna Murray. She just didn't have the 'voice' of the main character for me, so a little disappointing.

Any additional comments?

I love Peter May's books, but I was a little disappointed with this one. The ending was a surprise, but I don't think it was really explained enough for me, the how especially and even the why was a little weak. Having said that, I did enjoy it and look forward to the next Peter May release, particularly if read (exclusively?) by Peter Forbes.

I loved this book. Peter May is good at writing a good plot as well as well rounded characters. In this book he adopts an interesting style of telling the back story throughout the book without it jarring me as the reader. The small Scottish island atmosphere is well conveyed and blended well with the international fashion industry. A good listen.

Unlikely ending spoilt a good book

Too much to ask us to believe that if someone tries to murder you in the middle of the night by throwing you off a cliff you wouldn't mention it to someone...like the police! And if your loving husband had witnessed that, too much to ask us to believe he wouldn't tell someone. Spoilt a good story up to that point!!

Multiple narrators.

Not sure that I felt having more than one narrator actually contributed anything to the telling of the story, just made it feel a little disjointed.

not as good as the rest!

I love all Peter May's books narrated by Peter Forbes who has the loveliest voice. I'll keep you safe was spoilt by the female narrator. Too much detail given.

gripping story

This was an excellent listen. The way the book is narrated is extremely clever and both narrators were a pleasure to listen to. Highly recommended ✔

Disappointingly Ridiculous

I almost gave up on this early on and, having pushed on to the end, I wish I had. I’ve liked many of Peter May’s books but this one is too far-fetched.

Far too long winded

This book is far to long. Most of it could be deleted and the story would still be the same. It’s padded out with place names and descriptions and the recollections don’t add any think to the book. It’s not my idea of a thriller.
