About this listen
'Beautiful, insightful and honest' CILLIAN MURPHY
'A fascinating read' DON LETTS
This edition includes original music by the author.
As one-third of seminal band Cocteau Twins, Simon Raymonde helped to create some of the most beautiful and memorable albums of the '80s and '90s - music that continues to cast a spell over millions. This is the story of the band, in his words.
Beginning with Simon's remarkable childhood and exploring his relationship with his father, Ivor Raymonde (the legendary producer, musician and arranger for acts such as the Walker Brothers and songwriter for artists including Dusty Springfield), the book will journey through the musician's rise to prominence and his time with Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil.
It will also chart the successful career he has forged running his own label, Bella Union, for the past twenty-seven years, discovering, developing and working with globally renowned artists like Beach House, Fleet Foxes, Father John Misty and John Grant. And the narrative will lead us back to the present day, reflecting on Simon's most recent experiences in the music industry - all while going deaf in one ear.
A must-read for music fans, this is the incredible tale of Simon's life and legacy.©2024 Simon Raymonde (P)2024 Bonnier Books UK

Among The Best Music Memoir I’ve Read
Superb in every way. Engaging, thought provoking and extremely moving. Simon Raymonde comes across as an extremely well considered gentleman both thoughtful and kind. A must read in my humble opinion

A page turner for post punk and indie kids (of a certain age).
In the era of the ‘no stone left unturned’ rock biography, this is an excellent, earnest, honest (and most importantly!) enjoyable one. Perhaps all the better, for leaving just a couple of Cocteau Twin shaped stones be.

Journeys with Mr Raymonde
Having listened to the music of Cocteau Twins, Snowbird, Lost Horizons and the multivarious and wonderous artists signed to Bella Union records for over three quarters of my life. Since first hearing Cocteau Twins, when I purchased a copy of their legendary second album Head Over Heels (released in 1983) on cassette in 1985. I have been enthralled by the genius of Robin Guthrie Elizabeth Fraser and Simon Raymonde ever since he joined the band. So to be able to listen to Simon recount his wonderfully storied journey so far, has been both a joy and a pleasure. Now that I have finished the audio book. I'm going to settle down to read the hard back edition... Yes it's really that good.

Interesting memoir
Interesting memoir from Bella Union records supremo and former Cocteau Twins bassist. The audiobook is well narrated by the author and what emerges is a lot of hard earned wisdom and some great anecdotes. If you like the Cocteaus and/or Bella Union then this is like catnip.

The music business is cruel
Karen was in the year below Damian Hurst at Goldsmiths, not the same year. I was in her year on the same fine art course. 🙏🏼
The sadness around drug use and lack of understanding about money in the Cocteau Twins was unfortunate. For a band that meant a lot to me for their “anti rock” position they still fell at the same fences.

A Beautiful Reading
I prefer books dictated by the author as the inflections and emphases are better obviously. Simon Raymonde has a soothing and friendly voice and even when relating disturbing events, delivers without drama. It is a book I will listen to again sometime which I cannot say for many audible books. It was worth listening to for the music recommendations alone. I was aware of Bella Union but did not know half the artists on the roster and there are some gems there. Lovely all round particularly for fans of the Cocteau Twins and the esoteric.
