Joya no kane are temple bells rung late at night on December 31st, the last night of the year. 日本人は、除夜の鐘が鳴り響くと一年の終わりを感じます。
除夜の鐘とは、大晦日である12月31日の深夜に、寺院でつく鐘のこと。一般的に、午前0時をまたいで108回つかれます。
これは、人間には108の煩悩があり、鐘をつくごとに煩悩を一つずつ消していくためだそうです。
煩悩とは、欲や執念、嫉妬や怒りなど、人の心を惑わせたり、悩ませたりする心の働きを指す、仏教用語です。
除夜の鐘は日本各地の寺院で行われますが、知恩院の除夜の鐘はダイナミックなことで、全国的に有名です。
大晦日から新年にかけて、NHKのテレビ番組の『ゆく年くる年』が、各地の除夜の鐘を中継します。この番組を見ないと新年を迎えた気がしないという年輩の方も、少なくありません。
