 The second Monday in January is Seijin no Hi (Coming-of-Age Day), a special day to celebrate young people who have become adults. 日本では20歳になると成人とみなされ、飲酒や喫煙が認められます。
そんな若者たちを祝う日が、1月の第2月曜日の成人の日で、この日は各地で新成人を招いて成人式が行われます。
日本には昔、一定の年齢に達した子どもを成人とみなす儀式はありましたが、20歳を成人とし、現在のような成人式が行われるようになったのは1946年のこと。
成人式では地域の長から祝福の言葉が贈られたり、ミュージシャンのライブが行われたりします。
本来、成人式には「若者に大人としての自覚を持ってほしい」という思いが込められていますが、現在の成人式は、多くの若者にとっては堂々とお酒が飲める＂飲酒解禁日＂。
