About this listen

"Sebastian proves she is a new force to be reckoned with in historical romances.” (Booklist)

Some of Ben Sedgwick’s favorite things:

  • Helping his poor parishioners
  • Baby animals
  • Shamelessly flirting with the handsome Captain Phillip Dacre

After an unconventional upbringing, Ben is perfectly content with the quiet, predictable life of a country vicar, free of strife or turmoil. When he’s asked to look after an absent naval captain’s three wild children, he reluctantly agrees, but instantly falls for the hellions. And when their stern but gloriously handsome father arrives, Ben is tempted in ways that make him doubt everything.

Some of Phillip Dacre’s favorite things:

  • His ship
  • People doing precisely as they're told
  • Touching the irresistible vicar at every opportunity

Phillip can’t wait to leave England’s shores and be back on his ship, away from the grief that haunts him. But his children have driven off a succession of governesses and tutors and he must set things right. The unexpected presence of the cheerful, adorable vicar sets his world on its head and now he can’t seem to live without Ben’s winning smiles or devastating kisses.

In the midst of runaway children, a plot to blackmail Ben’s family, and torturous nights of pleasure, Ben and Phillip must decide if a safe life is worth losing the one thing that makes them come alive.

I found the first few minutes of this difficult. I took a dislike to the voice of the narrator, pleased to say that after a time I got used to the voice and found I enjoyed the vocal characterisation. Stay with it.

Surprised

This is such a wonderful story! I'm on a bit of a m/m romance binge at the moment, and swallowed this in two days.

If you enjoy governess-tames-wild-children-and their-father type romances, this is for you. A new take on an old trope, but done with such heart.

I am completely in love in Ben and Phillip. Their journey is painful and beautiful.

Cat Sebastian's writing is gorgeous, and I think the book could have handled being a bit longer. I would have appreciated:

1. Scenes with Ben and the children at the start of the book, for a bit of humour and showing the relationship building between them before Phillip arrives home.
2. A tacit acknowledgement and acceptance of Philip and Ben's relationship by Ben's father when they found Jamie at his house.
3. Ben making love to Philip for the first time (I am devastated at this omission).
4. An exchange of vows between Phillip and Ben in the church after Ben's final service.

These scenes would have had me bawling my eyes out. As it is I am still utterly charmed by this book, and will no doubt listen to it again very soon.

Joel Leslie is just perfect, this is a stunning narration. I look forward to listening to further books by this author and this narrator.

Enjoyed listening to this. Great narration and nice story. Didn’t grab me by the heart as much as some which is why the 4 stars, but I’ll still get more by this author.

Good listen
