About this listen

We were prepared for an earthquake. We had a flood plan in place. We could even have dealt with zombies. Probably.

But no one expected the end to be quite so... sticky... or strawberry scented.

Yahtzee Croshaw (Mogworld, Zero Punctuation Reviews) returns to print with a follow-up to his smash-hit debut: Jam, a dark comedy about the one apocalypse no one predicted.

"[Croshaw is] able to pull off slapstick comedy in print, and that's no easy feat."–ComicsAlliance

Great story, love yahtzee's humour, lots of swerves and interesting characters and an amazing performance.

brilliant

A great take on the apocalypse from a comedic viewpoint. The narrative is well balanced and the performance is very well done.

Another great story from Yahtzee

Was really getting into this book for a while but honestly the cult almost made me want to stop. Felt like every time they appeared, it broke my engagement just for Yahtzee to give me a boring grammar lecture and rant about young people. Thankfully I'd say it got better at the end with an engaging tragic ending but I don't think it's one I'll listen to again.

ironically enjoyable

… wasn’t so keen on this one. Some of the narration ( Tim in particular) / accents or delivery really got on my nerves. The characters are fairly selfish and stupid - I can’t believe they would have stuck together any length of time. I stuck it out to the end but struggled with it. The last few hours felt like a chore.

Love his other books but

This book was weird fascinating, lots of twists and turns, and I didn’t see the end coming by fucking loved it. Thank you for the recommendation

Uniquely amazing

I just love Crowshaw, he always makes me laugh out loud and this book was no different. I just wish I hadn’t listened to them all. I think I will have to start them all again.

Loved it!

As always impeccable delivery by Yahtzee (I adjust speed to 1.05 and that just makes us a bit smoother IMHO).

Story wasn't as strong as the Jaques McKeown or Mogworld books (I did enjoy the references to the latter). Unfair to say all the characters were underdeveloped as some good 'everyman almost hero' and 'Apocalypse Now' style descent into madness arcs worked for me.
However I don't know if the themes of futility and meaningless deaths really fitted into the narrative and the ending was rather unsatisfactory (again IMHO).

In conclusion; to put it into the world of Yahzee and Escapist, this was my FF8, some excellent set pieces, quite nicely rendered mechanics but let down by jarring plot points and only finished it out of obligation, won't replay unlike other bodies of work in the unconnected series 6.25/10

A good earworm to pass long journey

Another great yarn from Mr Croshaw. If you've listened and liked any of his other books, then this won't disappoint.

Sweet smelling death

I was really looking forward to another quality story in Yahtzee Crowshaws angry voice but this was not as good as previous books I’ve listened to. I like the idea of a book based on The Floor is Lava that everyone played but for me, just not enough happened. If you zone out for a while and then back in again nothing seems to happen. Also I recognise the character voices from previous books, makes understanding the new characters more difficult. Terrible, terrible American accent, must have been ironic.

Not the best but enjoyable

Love most work from this author but this just felt a little worn out. Started well, plenty of fun plots, and a strong conclusion. But it just felt like it went on too long and stretched out the premise to the point of boredom. Decent overall but yeah, the were a few times I was hoping it would just progress/end, especially around the ironic bin bag people.
Also, though the characters were unique in their ineptitude, it quickly became tiring without any strong/stern contrasting character(s).
Would definitely recommend their other works, though! A great performance and still a novel idea for a book.

Felt like a slog at times
