About this listen

Jessie Burton is lively and intelligent - she wants more than the respectable life in service her mother has planned for her. Times are changing; railways are being built across the land, bringing new freedom and possibilities. Jessie tastes that freedom when she meets an ambitious young navvy, newly arrived in Yorkshire. The attraction between them is overwhelming. And Jared Wilde is determined to make Jessie his wife. The primitive, colourful shanty towns that spring up around the railway works are nothing like the safe world Jessie once knew. But in spite of the hardness of life there, she finds happiness with Jared. Until another navvy becomes determined to destroy their future together....

Absolutely loved this. Anne Dover's wonderful narration brought the various characters to life. From the lowliest maid to the lord's, ladies and squires.
Jessie is a determined young woman, who does not have an easy life, and longs to be genuinely loved and cared for. Despite initial misgivings, she finds this in Jared, her strong, big, dependable husband from a humble background. They quickly forge a life together, which although not an easy one, they cope admirably, and their love grows stronger through adversity.

I really enjoyed listening to this book and look forward to listening to another story written by Anna Jacobs and read beautifully by Anne Dover. Maybe there will be a sequel to let us know how all the characters’ lives turned out to be in the the future. Lives in those days was different for the wealthy or poor people. It was very hard for some and even the more well to do people had their own problems. I loved it!
