About this listen

Daisy-Mae is now sure she’s awake. It’s not the cutting breeze or the musty smell that has her convinced, it’s the pain. You can’t dream pain. She is being held down, something tight over her arms, her chest too.

She turns her head for a different view: a whitewashed wall, faded by time, scuffed to add to the impression of a building deserted in a hurry. But there is something in the room that looks fresh: graffiti. The letters spell out three words that are enough to have her retching again: DON’T WAKE UP. The next day Daisy-Mae’s friend also disappears.

Twenty-two years ago, New Year’s Eve. Two young women set off home from the nightclub where they worked. Their battered bodies were found five days later. The killer was never caught.

Time is running out. History is repeating itself. Detective Maddie Ives is their only chance to get out alive.

I’ve listened to all of the books in the Maddie Ives series and this one I found the hardest to get along with.
Firstly, Rhiannon develops a Welsh accent. This was really off putting for me.
Then Blaker comes back in. Gets put in charge and Maddie just went with it?! Not sure she would have done that even though she has great affection for Harry. I didn’t find the storyline believable like others in this series.
Think it dragged on too long and then the ending seemed rushed .
I don’t believe that a copper would have been involved in the burying of a body and that the case would have been left as it had.
I just don’t know about this story.
I did like the fact that Grace Hughes from Book 2 makes a cameo in this. Nice touch.
Hoping for better in next book. This one was disappointing.

Couldn’t get on with this one…

I’ve really enjoyed the Maddy Ives series so far but I just couldn’t get to grips with this one. I found it disjointed and muddled and I pretty much knew who one of the killers was from the get go. It won’t put me off listening to the rest of the series but, for me, it’s definitely not one of Charlie’s best.

Not the best.

Liked the way it was set into different parts. Good storyline, that little more gripping.

Best so far

A fantastic story, as all in this series have been, but why must this narrator keep changing that voices of central characters!? First Harry Blaker in the third book and now six books in Rhiannon is suddenly incredibly Welsh. Both changes have been for the worst and very jarring. Why not just leave it be!?

Fantastic story, weird narration

Loved the story line. Very well written. My only problem with the performance was Rhiannon developing a Welsh accent! It was bad enough when Harry's voice took on a deeper voice after the first couple of books! Other than the change in voices/accents, it was a great story.

Listened to the whole story in a day!

found this one a little confusing and hard to follow at times, even the ending and there were several times I had to repeat a chapter especially at the end. so I didn't enjoy it quite as much as the previous books in this series.

I really struggled with this book. I've read some others in the series, but just felt that this was disjointed. Narrator is tolerable, but not great. There's no real distinction between the characters. The whole thing felt like laboured, and I returned it part way through.

Definitely up to usual standard.
