About this listen
Drawing on a lifetime of sniffing petrol fumes, Lights Out, Full Throttle stands large over the landscape of Formula One and takes the temperature of the good, the bad and the ugly of the petrolhead’s paradise.
Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill between them competed in 261 Grands Prix, amassing 25 wins, 49 podium finishes, one World Championship, 458 championship points, a Le Mans win, two smashed ankles, a broken arm, wrist and leg, 60 broken ribs and two bruised egos.
Having retired from racing, Johnny and Damon have become the one constant for passionate English F1 fans in a rapidly changing landscape. They have earned cult status as commentators and pundits, with viewers loving their unerring dedication to the sport’s greatness.
It offers F1 fans a tour of the sport - from Monaco to Silverstone, Johnny’s crowd surfing and Bernie’s burger bar, the genius of Adrian Newey and Colin Chapman, why Lewis Hamilton will never, ever move to Ferrari (probably), getting the yips, money, safety, what it’s like to have an out-of-body experience while driving a car in the pouring rain at 200 mph and the future of the sport in the wake of COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter.
Whether you’re a fan of Nigel, Niki, Kimi or Britney, pine for the glory days of Brabham, Williams, Jim Clark and Fangio, or believe that Lewis is one year away from retiring as the GOAT, Lights Out, Full Throttle is the oily rag for the petrolhead fan to inhale while waiting for the racers to line up on the grid.

Give it chance
This book took a little time to get going, the pairing of Hill & Herbert narrating an audio book started off a bit wooden, but the knowledge and story telling soon kicked in for the avid F1 fan from yesteryear to present day, really enjoyed it and laughed out loud whilst driving along listening.

These guys are brilliant together. I bet there are a lot more funny stories to share and hope they will do another audiobook.

Interesting
Good if you are into formula one although the forced back and forward narration between JH and DH is a bit odd!!

Entertaining book but Painful delivery
I enjoyed this book but it is intended to be a conversation between Damon Hill and Jonny Herbert. It is painfully obvious that both are just reading their lines. At the end it is clear that they actually recorded their sections in different recording studios, 1 is in Guildford, the other in Coventry.
If you can get past the presentation it is a surprisingly good book. If you can get past the sample, I would recommend you get it. Otherwise, save yourself the time and look elsewhere.

Herbert and Hill's Hilarious Histories
Johnny Herbert and Damon Hill weren't just brilliant British racing drivers, but they are great verbal sparring partners. This co-authored account of both drivers' careers and their insightful perspectives on the world of Formula 1 is consistently entertaining, witty and informative, even though there are a few inaccuracies to knit-pick like when Herbert mistakenly said that Mark Webber got one point in the 2002 Australian GP when he scored two points-and Herbert was a bit too obsessed with Lewis Hamilton for my liking, but generally the audiobook is a treat to listen to.

Funny and informative
Excellent dive into the world of F1. I was first a bit apprehensive of the "stiffness" of the reading of a book apparently written in dialogue format, but then I grew out of it. Damon and Johnny were excellent here, both in presentation and in creating the content. I'd love to hear more from them.

The inside perspective of two people who have been there, seen that, done it.
Keep politics out of sport, if I wanted to be lectured on that BLM BS I'd watch the news.
