Summary

There’s only one woman for him. The problem? She belongs to his best friend.

When it comes to hockey and women, Marty LeBrun is used to coming in second to his best friend and teammate, Zach Pruitt. And that’s okay because Marty’s sole aim is breaking into the NHL, a climb as steep as Mt. Everest—without oxygen—for a guy whose heart is greater than his talent. But all that changes when Claudia Campbell walks into their lives. Suddenly, playing Zach’s wingman is a role Marty is no longer willing to fill.

Claudia Campbell has been itching to escape her stifling family and spread her wings. None of her big plans include a serious relationship, but she soon finds herself falling for Zach and putting her plans on ice. There’s a bonus that comes with the hottest hockey player on campus, though, and that’s his buddy, Marty. As her relationship with Zach deepens, Marty becomes her best friend, her rock, the guy she trusts above all others—including Zach.

While he flounders in the minors, Marty envies Zach’s meteoric rise in the NHL. Zach has everything Marty wants: a thriving career and the girl. But Zach’s fame creates the perfect storm for excess, and when he begs Marty to keep his secrets, Marty is torn. Do his loyalties lie with his best friend since childhood? Or with his other best friend, the girl he secretly pines for?

In order to protect the woman he adores, Marty agrees to hide Zach’s recklessness. But secrets never stay buried, and Marty’s choice delivers devastating consequences. When Claudia discovers what Marty has been keeping from her, it’s game over.

Years pass and scars cover old wounds, but Marty is haunted by memories of the only woman he’s ever loved. Meanwhile, Claudia yearns for the friendship she shared with Marty. When a chance encounter brings them together again, will they take a shot at winning the biggest prize of all?

Marty and Claudia!

From the moment that Marty saw Claudia he was enchanted but he had become accustomed to never measuring up to his best friend Zach, both when it comes to women and hockey, so it was only natural that he believed she preferred Zach. As a result, he was willing to take friendship instead but when he made the wrong choice he is left with a hole in his life when she wants nothing to do with him.

Claudia feels betrayed by Marty’s actions and feels she can no longer trust him. She has moved forward with her life, and it will be years before destiny brings them together once again, but will this finally be their time or is the pain of the past too much to overcome?

Marty has always known that Claudia is the only woman for him however their journey wasn’t without its angst, setbacks, and challenges. The narrators were a perfect choice for the characters as you could feel their insecurities as well as the depth of their love.

Slow Burn

Kind of a spoiler, almost.
I don’t think I have ever heard another book with this story line. I’ve heard of liking each others partners but they actually didn’t get together or even acted like it while they are still with their original partners(which I really liked). I liked the characters but this book took a little too long to get to the relationship stuff for me. The narration was great, I definitely recommend this series.

Good listen!

I love hockey romance and friends to lovers, so this one hit several points for me. The characters were well written, though they will certainly frustrate you. Especially Marty. I wished he'd manned up a lot sooner, but I suppose it wouldn't have been much of a story if he had.

The story was well done overall, and I enjoyed listening to it. I did this one on audio book. Aubrey Vincent and Ryan Lee Dunlap both did wonderful jobs bringing these two characters to life. They both have nice to hear voices that make this one an easy listen. Definitely suggest giving this one a listen!

5 Stars!

The series that keeps giving! I love a good friends-to-lovers story and this delivered! It has officially become my new fav of the series!

Line Change serves as the prequel novel to the Playmakers series. It features the story of teams’ coach Marty LeBrun in his younger years before he becomes the coach. The story begins when Marty is at uni. Along with his best friend and team mate, Zach Pruitt, his sole aim at this time is breaking into the NHL. In fact, they are both trying to break into the NHL. However, Zach is proving more successful than Marty and is quicky rising, whilst Marty isn’t quite there yet with his skills and is in the minors trying to climb the ranks. In general, Marty is used to coming in second to Zach. Everything changes when they meet Claudia Campbell out one night. They both take a liking to her and suddenly, playing Zach’s wingman is a role Marty is no longer willing to fill.

Meanwhile, Claudia has always felt sheltered and stifled with her upbringing. She is itching to escape her stifling family and spread her wings. None of her big plans include a serious relationship, but she is drawn to Zach, and soon finds herself falling for him and putting her plans on ice. There’s a bonus that comes with the hottest hockey player on campus, though, and that’s his best friend Marty. As her relationship with Zach deepens, Marty becomes her best friend, her rock, the guy she trusts above all others—including Zach.

As the years go by, Zach rises in fame within the NHL, and his and Claudia’s relationship take a back seat in his mind. He slowly turns into someone both Marty and Claudia do not recognise, indulging in a lot of unsavoury things, including many different women. He begs Marty to keep his infidelity a secret from Claudia, putting Marty in an awkward position with Claudia. Once the truth comes out, Marty loses the one thing he values and cares about the most (aside from his NHL dreams), his friendship with Claudia and her trust in him. Can they work things out? Will they be able to get back the friendship they once had? And can they ever move past the friendship stage?

This was just soooo good! It was entertaining and it drew me all the way in! This was also a slow burn (sports) romance that span almost 2 decades. That might seem like a long time but the way G.K Brady wrote the story and developed the characters was top tier! 👌 And it never felt too long. We were able to see the characters grow and change over the years. Another thing that I liked was that we could see their friendship in the early years, but also, once they met up years later, we saw them get to know each other again. They did not just simply assume and rely on the previous knowledge of each other. I feel that this is more realistic because a decade is a long time, and people would change so much in that time period. So, it was great to see Marty and Claudia really diving into rebuilding their friendship and later relationship as though they were, not quite strangers, but also, not like they knew everything about each other. Their friendship and romance felt very believable and I was soo invested. THIS is how you do friends-to-lovers right!

Marty was my favourite character here! I loved him soo much! 💕 I also just loved how sweet and caring he was. He treated everyone close to him so well and was there for them when they needed him; his family, Claudia, and even Zach, who ended up doing him dirty smh! Some of Claudia’s decisions did annoy me at times, especially with how long she stayed with Zach, and the fact she couldn’t see how much Marty loved and cared for her. However, that was actually very realistic and believable considering how much Zach lied to her, and how much she thought she loved him. Furthermore, that slight annoyance was only slight. I still really liked her character. Overall, this was just such a great read/listen! I enjoyed the characters, the story progression and pacing, and I had a fun time!

Ryan Lee Dunlap and Aubrey Vincent were amazing narrators, and so great with their roles as Marty and Claudia respectively! Their voices brought more weight and levity to the story and its characters. They were able to portray the different emotions the characters went through throughout the story very well. I really enjoyed the story even more because of their narrations!

Loved the dual narration of Ryan Lee Dunlap and Aubrey Vincent, who bring the characters, angst, humour, romance and heat to your ears.

Marty had from the moment he saw Claudia knew she was his heart. But he was used of coming second to he his best friend Zach. Marty believed she preferred Zach. So instead of love he was willing to take friendship. But this only left a hole in his heart.
While his star raises Zach begs Marty to keep his secrets, to protect the woman he adores, he does. But secrets never stay buried, and Marty’s choice delivers devastating consequences.
Claudia feels betrayed by Marty’s actions and feels she can no longer trust him. It is years before fate brings them together once again.

Line Change

Line Change is the prequel in The Playmakers series. This is an emotional ride for Marty, Zach, and Claudia. I like getting to meet these characters where their stories truly begin. It is a bit of a slow burn. You wonder if Marty will ever find his happiness. Can't wait to see where this series might end up.

Aubrey Vincent and Ryan Lee Dunlap are both new narrators to me. They both did a great job narrating these characters in dual style narration. Can't wait to hear more from them.

Emotional second chance romance

This book will have your emotions all over the place. It’s heavier than the other books I’ve read in the series. First off, if you do not like immature characters who make stupid decisions you will have a problem with the first part of this book because they're in college they're in their early twenties and they don’t make the best decisions. I kept getting so frustrated with the characters, thinking “can you not see that this is going to end badly?”. I related to the characters more in the second half of the book when they're a bit older.

This book deals with heavy topics like substance abuse and alcohol abuse. After Zach joins the NHL and starts to make a lot of money and gets famous he starts to change or maybe his true colours start showing and his relationship with Claudia starts to get shaky. There’s a point where they're having an argument and I honestly was afraid that he was going to assault her, which thankfully did not happen, the book is not that dark, but it's a credit to the narrators that they had me so emotionally invested in the story that I was freaking out thinking “please don’t hit her, please don’t hit her.”

The narrators put in a really good performance. Mind you, this book is written in third person POV so it's easier to feel detached from the story, but these guys had me invested. I could see the story playing out clearly in my mind. They did a really good job of bringing the characters and the story to life. They also did a really good job with the spicy scenes. Marty and Claudia had a strong emotional connection when they were really close friends before and things escalate quite quickly when they reconnect. The narrators do a really good job of conveying the intimacy in those scenes.

This book holds a lot of lessons like fighting for what you want and letting go of relationships that are no longer healthy. I loved the character growth in this story.

Marty & Claudia!

Talk about a good story! This is the history I love. After listening meeting the team first in the series, this look back at how coach Marty LeBrun got where he is was eye opening! Marty and Zach are best friends, both playing hockey in college with the dream of being called up to the NHL. When they meet Claudia, Zach is the one that makes the play for her, and Marty is left to be their best friend. That’s not a bad place to be, but once Zach gets his dream, and finds himself in the life of puck bunnies and parties, he isn’t willing to give up his girl. And Marty keeps his secrets. But where does that leave him with his dream and Claudia? Slowly, Marty finds his way in the minors and when finally called up, tragedy strikes. But everything happens for a reason, right? Now years later, trusts broken, secrets revealed, Marty and Claudia cross paths again. Is this their chance? Will Marty ever get to what he wants? I love, love, love this story. GK Brady has created a world I fell into, and this book is just the icing on the cake. Where does Marty end up? Give this a listen to find out! Sport romance at it’s best, you will want to use a credit on this one.

Aubrey Vincent and Ryan Lee Dunlap are the story tellers for this fabulous book, and they both bring it in spades! Vincent is Claudia. She gives her a feeling of normalcy, and her frustration and hurt with Zach is easy to feel. Her chemistry with Marty is always present. Dunlap is Zach and Marty, the arrogant and the wonderful. He plays each with just the right amount of feeling so it’s not over the top, but a totally believable friend relationship. And his passion for Claudia, always present. These two are fantastic together and made for a great listen!
