About this listen

From National Book Award finalist and New York Times best-selling author Jason Reynolds comes a novel told in 10 blocks, showing all they different directions a walk home can take.

This story was going to begin like all the best stories. With a school bus falling from the sky. But no one saw it happen. They were all too busy:

Talking about boogers.

Stealing pocket change.

Skateboarding.

Wiping out.

Braving up.

Executing complicated handshakes.

Planning an escape.

Making jokes.

Lotioning up.

Finding comfort.

But mostly, too busy walking home.

Jason Reynolds conjures 10 tales (one per block) about what happens after the dismissal bell rings and brilliantly weaves them into one wickedly funny, piercingly poignant look at the detours we face on the walk home, and in life.

don't be fooled by the cartoonish cover

fabulous.
cover makes it looks like a book for younger listeners. But the themes are stronger and I would suggest 10years old as a minimum.

Hugely disappointing

I bought this because it won the 2021 Carnegie Award and I love Long Way DOwn. However, this book, whilst it had some poignant moments, was dull. I didn't connect with the characters, the storylines felt like they were backstories of the characters rather than showing the interaction between them, and I didn't enjoy the many different narrators; I felt it would have been better with just one person doing different voices. SUch a shame, Reynolds is obviously an incredibly talented writer but this isn't one of his best.
