About this listen
Mildred D. Taylor's Newbery Award-winning masterpiece with an introduction written and read by Jacqueline Woodson, just in time for its 40th anniversary!
Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family's struggle to maintain their integrity, pride, and independence in the face of racism and social injustice. And it is also Cassie's story - Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family, even as she learns to draw strength from her own sense of dignity and self-respect.

This should be on everyone's book list.
A story full of everything. Seen through the eyes of a child. The best way to view such stories.

Brilliant
I first read this book at school around 15 years ago, as brilliant, thought provoking and important as I remember. A brilliant story on many levels and a true coming of age story. A must read for children and adults.

AmaZing
I liked how the book is so descriptive and very realistic. Also the audiobook creates a great atmosphere and makes you more tense, happy, sad and scared of events in the book.
I would recommend this to 12 year old readers who are good at underetanding complex meanings and storylines.
I rated this 5 stars because there is ABSOLUTELY nothing bad about it. Even though the n word is used, kt has to be, because thats what people were called in those days

A thought provoking and moving children's book
This is the book that made me an Audible convert. I downloaded it to listen to for my degree module in children's literature. I'd skipped over it earlier in the module but decided to give it a go when writing my final essay and I am so glad I did. I 'read' it in three days.
It's beautifully read and the story is moving. the injustice that the main character is put through makes you want to shout at the audio speakers. It was the realisation of the ancient textbooks that really moved me to tears and got me really thinking to what life was like then.

Needs to be in the curriculum
A powerful and child friendly book focusing on Cassies bravery and pride.
It addresses a time of turbulence, racism, mistreatment. The importance of equity and equality.

A wonderful story combining history, love & hope
I loved this powerfully written book. The characters came to life and their daily struggles were both heartwarming and courageous.
