About this listen
1957. Lord James Harrington and his wife, Beth, run a country hotel in the village of Cavendish, deep in the heart of West Sussex. James and Beth are discussing the latest Cavendish Players production, The Devil Incarnate, when their cleaner informs them that farmer Alec Grimes is missing.
When James finds Grimes dead, he is certain of foul play. But the doctor says he died of natural causes, and even good friend Detective Chief Inspector George Lane dismisses his suspicions. So James decides to put his own sleuthing skills to the test....

Lord James and his wife and friends are trying to find out why the crime has been committed and by whom. The only thing that I, as a UK reader noticed was when they refer to pumpkin carving. At that time people in the UK carved turnips, and if you think pumpkin carving is difficult, try carving a turnip. It is really good and I will be listening to the rest of the series. It also has a recipe at the end, that sounds good.

Found the characters a bit stupid

The characters are excellent in these stories - very believable, and 'of the period'. I'm not too sure how much Halloween was celebrated at that time, to be honest. Children certainly went round collecting for Nov 5th, but I felt Halloween re-gained its more ancient popularity in the nineties. Certainly, growing up in the fifties, it wasn't mentioned at all in the villages in and around my home.
First Harrington disappointment.
