About this listen

A visit from the tall, thin woman he arrested many years ago - now married to a hapless burglar - leads Maigret on a tortuous investigation in which he struggles with a formidable suspect.

'When he had set them to work, Maigret had had a merry, almost fierce glint in his eye. He had set them loose on the house like a pack of hounds on the trail of a scent, encouraging them not with his voice, but by his whole attitude...would events have played out in the same manner, if the man from Rue de la Ferme hadn't been a heavyweight like him, both physically and psychologically?'

This novel has been published in previous translations as Maigret and the Burglar's Wife.

Stunning story - one of the best Maigrets.

Very often their are weakness in a Maigret story, often in the hurried endings, but here there is only perfection. A wonderful story, tremendous characterisations and, of course, there is a Gareth Armstrong narrating. Whenever I listen to a Maigret story I hear Gareth’s voice and I picture Michael Gambon’s face and I have Simenon’s true Maigret.

Unconvincing

Unconvincing comclusion. Left wanting more exposition and confirmation at the end.
Gareth Armstrong’s narration is top notch.

Maigret's integrity.

A brilliant story with a fabulous ending, narrated by one of the very best actors in the business who portrays the perfect Maigret. Simenon was a literary genius with not a single wasted or unnecessary word.
