About this listen
55 BC and Caesar's army gathers in the north of Gaul, preparing to drive away invading Germanic peoples and to traverse the dangerous northern ocean bringing punishment to the tribes of Britannia for their assistance of Gaulish rebels. But Fronto's troubles don't stop there.
As his burgeoning relationship with Lucilia steps to a new level, so do his responsibilities at home, a situation exacerbated by the disruptive influence of the villainous Clodius in the city, causing trouble and endangering those about whom Fronto cares most.
With two troublesome new centurions, a selection of worthless and argumentative senior officers and the suspicious deaths of a number of notables, Fronto's year is about to take a turn for the unexpected.

Brilliant
Another excellent trip to Ancient Rome. Gaul defended from Germanic raids and with a quick trip to Britannia. Well written and read with characters that are genuinely likeable. Perhaps with the exception of Ceasar 😂

Gripping stuff
Great storytelling, compelling characters, outstanding narration. This series of Caesar’s Gallic Wars goes from strength to strength. Compares with the Macro and Cato novels.

Brilliant !
I've done all Adrian Goldsworthy, all Simon Scarrow but this serious I'm really loving.
This one in particular, especially the first chapter with old grumpy Fronto I was in stitches, absolutely love the humour and the narration is very easy to listen to...

Quite the triller this time around.
It’s my 4th book and I am still looking forward to the next one. I do hope to meet Fronto again. Always a pleasure to listen to this narrator.

Twists and turns
The plot turns this way and that, the battles are gory and brilliantly wrought, the characters well rounded and fascinating. Another great adventure for our Roman soldier and his family.

Best Book so Far!
Can't get enough of the adventures of Fronto. You know a book is well written when you are actually concerned about the fate of the characters in it and thats how I felt at several points in this book. Already have downloaded book 5...
