About this listen

The Heresy came to Calth without warning. In just a few hours of betrayal and bloodshed, the proud warriors of the XIIIth Legion - Guilliman's own Ultramarines - were laid low by the treachery of their erstwhile brothers of the XVIIth.

Now, as the planet is scoured by solar flares from the wounded Veridian star, the survivors must take the fight to the remaining Word Bearers and their foul allies or face damnation in the gloomy arcology shelters beneath the planet's surface.

In the novella-length Calth That Was, Graham McNeill highlights the fateful encounter that will alter the destiny of Captain Ventanus and shape the face of the Ultramarines Chapter for 10,000 years to come. The battle for Calth is far from over.

Great but not the greatest

I genuinely love all of the Horus Heresy books but this one, although interesting, didn’t quite hit the mark for me. I saw some other reviews that said this collection was worth skipping but I don’t think that’s true. It fills in some of the gaps for the aftermath of Calth and it expanded on the story one of my favourite perpetuals.

Hit and miss

Some alright ones, the short story about the perpetual pushes the story forward a bit but others are forgettable.

Totally skipable

Series of short stories that add nothing to the series. Ranging from average to dull. Great performances, but one of the weakest books in the series.

Great stories but too many similar ones.

The stories by themselves are great, amazing backstory and after story to the calth invasion, my only negative is after listening to a few in a row they kind of blend together since most are Ultramarine or word bearer.

Skip to the last two stories

The last two stories are pretty good but the rest of the anthology are forgettable.

Anthologies are always a mixed bag.

There were some really exciting and interesting stories. A couple dragged, but the betrayal at Calth is one of the aspects of the horus heresy that I really enjoy reading about, so I do recommend it to fans. Newbies to the Horus heresy are better off starting at the beginning of the series.

A mixed bag...

If you're working your way through all the books, you can give this one a miss. Doubly so if you've not read any of the others... the only saving grace is the last two short stories, and even then, you can probably skip this book.

Several Short Stories....

....this isn't a bad series of short stories, sadly just a few of them are as gripping as others in the Heresy books. Bit more world building and one interesting story told from a unique perspective....not a must read if your looking to get on with the Heresy.
