About this listen

A woman is found dead in a ditch. As the list of suspects grows, a town’s dirty secrets are revealed.

It’s a cold winter evening, and rain is sweeping in from the Atlantic when a young woman, having braved the weather to visit her sick mother in a remote part of Ireland, comes across an obstacle in the road. She clears the highway of stones from a damaged bridge only to see the body of a woman in a ditch. With no phone reception, she travels to the nearest police station to report what she has found.

The local Garda waste no time in attending the scene of the crime. The woman is clearly dead, but it needs proper forensics to establish if foul play was the cause. In the meantime, is it not possible that the woman driver was in fact the culprit? She is clearly not telling the whole truth.

A game of cat and mouse ensues when the inquiry is upgraded to a murder investigation. The trouble is, when the victim is recognised as a sex worker, there is no shortage of possible suspects. And few of them, if any, are willing to tell the truth to the police. It will take all of Galway detectives Hays and Lyons’ experience to cut through the web of lies and identify the killer in their midst.

Good story

A good story. Really enjoyed it but the narrator was poor and took a star from my rating.

awful narrator

I couldnt get further than 20 mins into the book as the narration was over excitable and unbelievable. perhaps more suited to a children's book.

Pedestrian

A very simplistic and pedestrian story and plot. Nothing to write home about. Would not recommend.

Disappointing

I had hoped this story would be a good introduction to the series but found it repetitive in several places and some of the characters left a lot to be desired. It wasn't worth the money even though I got it on a cheap offer. I certainly wouldn't have paid full price or wasted a credit on it.

Pretty terrible

The only good thing about this is it's brevity which is also a bad point, a credit for three and a half hours is poorly spent, especially in this case, I made a huge mistake by getting this and book two at the same time, I shall not bother with any more by this author, the writing is clunky, no character building, no emotion at all, the narrator is sonorous and dreary.

I would totally recommend people to AVOID this book altogther.

clichéd and predictable

Eastern European prostitutes, chemistry between the DCI and his sergeant, implausible finding of clues! A great deal of rushed almost précis of the plot this was not very well written. The narration let down what little story there was by being monotone as though reading a list of directions

poor

Chauvenism is strong in this one, and the narrator knows no punctuation or at times even needs to take a breath

Disappointed

Managed to listen to the end it should be good but it wasn’t. The characters weren’t very interesting maybe because of the monotone of the narrator who managed to make all the sound the same whether Irish or Polish. Male or female. He just sounded bored . The ending was rushed making me think that the author was as well just wanted to finish and get it over with. Overall if you want a good listen to a thriller this definitely is not. Glad I didn’t waste a credit on this.
