Summary

After a soul-crushing Tinder date, a woman returns to her apartment to cook some squid and seethe. Her eye starts to itch; her memory starts to skip, and she starts to spiral. Offense is an auditory explosion and an exploration of the rash of loneliness...and what happens when the voices inside our heads start to warp.

I want more!

The only bad thing is how short it is. It is quite a weird story but I love how it's told and that we get a stream of mondane thought from the main character.

Immensely Odd and Uncomfortable. I Love it!

CW: Mental Health Spiral, Injury to Eye with Detail and some Gore

This is a weird one and I can't really get my head around why I loved it as much as I did.

It was amazing listening to this directly after listening to Interviewing by William Seymour, which felt like such a neurotypical person imagining what panic attacks were like and missing the mark massively (judging by other reviews, your mileage may vary), Offense really captures the inner monologue and self conscious anxiety of dating while neurodivergent. This has veehl mixed reviews, so it really does show the joys of subjectivity.

There is something about the prose and multilayered dialogue, which Emma Galvin brings to panicked life, that truly sold the awkward date montage. Some of the lines and situations were clichéd, but everything around them and the overall effect are incredible.

The story takes an abrupt and rather extreme turn towards the end that really shocked me and snapped my ADHD brain into full focus. It gets weird and might not end in a way that is satisfying for all, but I feel seen and strangely energised after listening to this.

great performance

a version of an insane mind. amazing performance, i thought the production of this was great, setting the scene to complement the internal monologue of the main character, and to become part of the broken mind. from a psychologist's point of view, i thought this was incredibly informative.
in the story, the main character, already predisposed, had been triggered after going on a date, and we witness her mind as it starts skipping and looping, until it splits apart into a full-blown episode (most likely, the incipit stages of schizophrenia). instead of taking control of her mind, the main character moves with the flow of her thoughts, validating them, ultimately facilitating the devolution of self.

Sorry, I don’t get it. I can’t understand what most other reviewers are getting at. I found it confusing, disturbing and disappointing as there was no resolution to the story.
