About this listen

THE #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE MARTIAN • Soon to be a major motion picture starring Ryan Gosling, directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, with a screenplay by Drew Goddard

Winner of the 2022 Audie Awards' Audiobook of the Year

Number-One Audible and New York Times Audio Best Seller

More than one million audiobooks sold

A lone astronaut must save the earth from disaster in this incredible new science-based thriller from the number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Martian.

Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, he realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Alone on this tiny ship that's been cobbled together by every government and space agency on the planet and hurled into the depths of space, it's up to him to conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And thanks to an unexpected ally, he just might have a chance.

Part scientific mystery, part dazzling interstellar journey, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian - while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

Another brilliant book by Andy Weir. Ray Porter’s narration is spot on - he brings all the characters to life. I literally could not stop listening until the book finished. Highly recommended!

Do I like this book, question?

The last new book I listened to (Circe) was bad-bad-bad, so it was a joy to read something this good-good-good again. Fans of the Martian will feel right at home here, as will anyone who has seen the film Arrival. That sweet combination gives us Andy Weir's latest and greatest book, Project Hail Mary.

The Martian was about one man's struggle to survive in a hostile environment, but in PHM the stakes are raised; its about the survival of the entire human race. Unlike the Martian, PHM is told entirely from one man's perspective, in the present and through flashbacks that are cleverly weaved into the main narrative. This singular pov helps us connect with Grace, like it did with Mark Watney. Although in hindsight I still prefer Watney and characterization isn't Weir's strongest point.

Like the Martian, PHM is full of well researched, real sounding science, the difference here being that Andy Weir has flexed his science-fiction muscles a little more. Despite a greater emphasis on the fiction part of Sci-fi, the solutions to the various problems our protagonist faces all sound plausible and scientific.

The switch from Mars to a outer space brings all sorts of new risks for our hero, who doesn't even know his name, or where he is to begin with. That's the first bit of problem solving we get and it's also where the book is at its funniest.

It just keeps getting better and I don't want to spoil the plot, suffice to say it's delightful and unexpected. This is a more creative book than the Martian in some ways and it was a treat to listen to. The narrator brings extra personality and feeling to the characters and there's even audio effects to make the experience that little bit more immersive. It's all immensely satisfying, with even our guy's insistence on explaining all the sciencey stuff making sense in the context of the story.

Sometimes PHM gets a little too heavy on the technical details, and I was able to predict a couple of things which lessened the emotional impact a tad. A very minor nitpick is the complete absence of British scientists. It appears they don't exist in Weir World, but that's fine. PHM still remains a warm, humorous, hopeful and emotionally engaging thrill ride til the end. I can't wait for the film that'll never happen now. Thanks Covid.

Brilliant. Captivating. Wonderful. I don't know how else to describe this book. The plot was enthralling. The characters are wonderful. Everything just seemed to come together.

I think this was definitely an improvement on The Martian. I skipped some of the science in that one but here the science was simple enough that you could follow along with what was being done and why. I have heard some criticism of the science being too complex but that says more about the state of education than anything else. Any 15 year old with a B in physics will have no trouble understanding this.

I wish the ending had been slightly different with more info on what happened in one area but it was a great ending nonetheless. The arc of the story felt complete.

The narration was flawless. I'm glad I listened to this as an audiobook since the nature of the story lends itself so much to that medium. I think the audiobook has to be better than a physical book here.

Book of the year!!

Update on my fourth listen. I get something new out of it each time.
wouldn't say that lightly. It took me a little while first time to get into the rhythm of this novel but I am soooo very glad I did. The brilliant SF plot is populated by Real Science, and all problems are expertly taken apart and re-assembled. Naturally this requires our protagonist to be extremely clever in many fields of study, but I liked that, and also appreciated the degree of development we experience as we have to make up our minds about him. Do stick with it and I hope you'll love it as much as I did. Oh PERFECT narration by Ray Porter too!

A beautiful book

This book is screaming out to be a film....
As good if not better then the Martian and that is one amazing book, a book I constantly go back to listen to. Now it may have to be Project Hail Mary. Wow... performance by Ray Poter has really brought life into the book with his narration performance. I don't want to give any information away from this book. Just make a tea relax and enjoy the performance of this excellent book. 10/10

I loved The Martian but couldn't get into Artemis. This goes back to a similar situation and a similar character type. I really don't want to spoil a single thing since I went in mostly blind and loved the surprises. One thing I will say is that there are a lot of flashbacks so if you think you've missed something there's probably an explanation on its way.

If you liked the Martian you'll love this.
