Sir Alex Ferguson looked at Joe Sealey: 'You know your dad saved my career?' Joe replied: 'And you saved his.'

More than three decades before, in 1990, Ferguson's managerial career stood at its lowest ebb. After three barren years at Old Trafford, he was facing dismissal. There was just the FA Cup final left. Manchester United were lucky to escape with a 3-3 draw at Wembley. For the replay, Ferguson took the gamble of his life, replacing his long-standing keeper, Jim Leighton, with Les Sealey, on loan from Luton. United won. Ferguson remained, winning another 24 major trophies.

Les Sealey would play in another three finals for United. When he died suddenly, aged 43, Les left behind a warm, witty, and detailed autobiography in the form of a Tupperware box full of cassette tapes. His death, however, threw his son, Joe, into a tormented spiral of alcoholism and drug abuse before he was dragged from the brink.

Enjoyed learning more about Les Sealey particularly relating the Man Utd in the early 90s

About half of this book is about his son’s personal battles. Maybe an interesting aside but I’m sure not why people buy this book.

Very interesting book with a lot of predictions not obscured by hindsight fallacy and takes you back the the eighties, nineties and dawn of millennium.

Not sure on the nonlinear story line and inter-spliced with his family history after 2001.

It’s a shame the some of the audiotapes of his voice aren’t added in by bonus content.

I support Aston Villa - one of the clubs Lea Sealey played for. I read about this book in one of the broadsheets and immediately looked for it on audible. It plays out with Les and his son Joe’s lives chapter by chapter, past and present.
I just found it really interesting because it coincided with a period of time when I was really emotionally invested in football so I remember quite vividly the people and matches referred to in the book.

Such an enjoyable listen.

The unusual way the story of a life was told

The parts of the book relating directly to Les Sealey, his life and his career are well worth a listen. Disappointed that great chunks of the book relate to his sons life and career(s) - I struggled to see why this was necessary other than to pad the length of the book out. I'd suggest to anyone listening to the book to skip past any chapter that relates to his son Joe Sealey and head for one that relates to Les. Well narrated but the content did include some questionable errors. States Les was on £30k a week at Man Utd in 1990 then goes on to talk about the contract offer post 1990 Cup Final of around £1200 a week??? Also poor that they pronounce the name of the well know Scottish international goalkeeper as Alan Roe (Alan Rough) surely somebody could have spotted and corrected that.

A bit of a disjointed book thats not all about Les Sealey, why?
