What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I am a fan of this genre, both in print and on audible, but now I'm starting to feel that I have listened to everything of quality that is available. Joe Abercrombie ( utterly brilliant charactersiation) Brandon Sanderson ( plots and concepts always leave me wondering where he gets his ideas from) Anthony Ryan, Brent Weeks. Brian Staveley, and of course George RR Martin, are all so far above this offering that Kriss Hiatt doesn't deserve to be in the same genre/class to be honest.This book is appallingly written. "He wished that he will be able to ..." Tenses are often muddled and vocabulary is just wrong. "We'll displace with the pleasantries..." Painful to listen to I'm afraid.
The narrator sounds as if he is reading to a class of 5 year olds, although, given the material he is working with that is probably not his fault entirely. The plot, such as it is, is thin, predictable, and flat. Characters are mostly 2-dimesional.
I made it to chapter 13, but I will be returning it now. How did it even get published? Waste of a credit.
What could Kris A. Hiatt have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Improve his vocabulary and grammar knowledge. Take a writing course to learn the basics of plot and characterisation.Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Tim Bruce?
Steven Pacey is my favourite narrator, closely followed by Joe Jameson, but I wouldn't insult either of them by asking them to narrate this.What character would you cut from Path of The Calm?
