About this listen

When Moslem fundamentalists blow up a key Soviet oil complex, making an already critical oil shortage calamitous, the Russians figure they are going to have to take things into their own hands. They plan to seize the Persian Gulf, and more ambitiously, to neutralise NATO. Thus begins Red Storm, an audacious gamble that uses diplomatic maneuvers to cloak a crash military build-up. When Soviet tanks begin to roll, the West is caught off guard. What looks like a thrust turns into an all-out shooting war, possibly the climactic battle for control of the globe.

Best war novel ever

Loved the book, read it regularly. Excellent weave of different aspect of a non nuclear world war with 1980s technology. Would recommend highly.

A bit outdated but cracking techno.

Best WW3 Novel I've read by a country Mike. The technology is a bit outdated now but it doesn't take away the sheer scale and the interwoven stories. Clancy's beat imho.

Great story with a few cringy moments

My favourite Clancy, it offers a sweeping narrative of an imagined world war 3. A bit dated now it nonetheless holds up well and captures the tension of grand scale combat.

A couple of criticisms:
A) Hearing it read aloud one truly appreciates quite how cringe worthy some of the dialogue is regarding the love interest.

B) While the suffering of war is often discussed the story never really gives you a feeling of its true horrors. Psychological impacts are hinted at but despite key characters suffering losses of close friends there is no real sense of grief. It comes across a bit boys own adventure. The book is at a grander scale than would truly allow such themes to be explored and Clancy does touch on it but if you're wanting a more personal story this probably isn't for you.

Truly Brilliant

I started listening to this book via YouTube but it only got partway through. I was so involved with the story I had to join Audible to hear the end.
I'm gutted to have finished it !!!

A very long and realistic action narrative

In the light of present events in the Ukraine this book is uncannily accurate in technical detail, in spite of being written in 1998. I guess missiles are smarter after 20+ years and tracked vehicles more vulnerable while supply chain issues are critical just as now. Clancy delves into the motivations and back story of a selection of key characters on both sides. The number of evolving parallel threads in the fast-paced action does demand keeping awake.

A Great Classic War Story

What a fantastic book! As a Soldier of the 1970’s who served in BAOR West Germany during my service, preparing to face the Soviet Union land forces should they invade the West, this book reminded me of how things were at that time and how things could have turned out so easily.
This story supposed that the Soviet forces attacked the West using only conventional forces (I.e. no nukes!) in a surprise attack catching the West by surprise and covers Air, Sea and land theatres of operations.
Full of details about the technology of war when written and with a storyline following a number of characters on both sides of the conflict, the tactical chess game between the two powers and individuals experiences on and under the sea, in the air and on land, gives the reader/listener a truly immersive view of conventional warfare on a grand scale.
A must read for anyone interested in military matters or who just enjoys a Great War story, highly recommend!

The Classic, Well-Told

A great boom, you know that. A total page-turner, PAGE BURNER! The narration is excellent with just a few odd pronunciations. I had this running pretty much constantly for about 3 days. Loved it.
