About this listen

Paul was reading a newspaper. Catherine was reading a novel. So begins Room on the Sea, André Aciman's scorching and elegiac love-story about a middle-aged man and woman who meet in the bullpen of jury selection and spend a sultry summer’s week trespassing ever further into each other's hearts.

What begins as a flirtation quickly evolves into something deeper, something Paul and Catherine must carry on in secret - and with the understanding that anything more than a casual crush is out of the question. But as the week draws to a close, the end of their rendezvous comes into focus, and Paul and Catherine are forced to decide whether to act on their feelings or leave the fantasy of what could have been to the annals of the past.

By turns scintillating and philosophical, Room on the Sea is a compulsively listenable story of love, fate, and last chances.

Just beautiful

Such a beautiful story told with tenderness and humor … it was captivating from the start and while it’s a very short read, it was completely captivating thank you - I loved it!

brilliant short story

Great story well told.
Having experienced Mon que (spelling?) myself and missed that opportunity, the story resonated with my own experiece and I still wonder 30 years later what might have happened.

I liked that the story did not go on further because it may have all unravelled, & i did not want that.

A perfectly written story about love in later life

A very enjoyable and relateable story. Would definitely recommend, especially if you are in the 'older' age bracket! Very tender and insightful.

Boring middle age crisis

The relentless idea that happiness comes from outside is a common belief that make us all unhappy automatically. We think partners are the answers to our search for fulfilment, but it’s an illusion. And from this point of view I find this novel boring and cliche, we dispose of people as if they were objects that made us happy one moment in time, but then, like with an car or dress we start to become bored to the point of thinking to change them for a new one, a different one, so we think, and then we repeat it till we die. Love is within us, only when we share it we receive it. We are not a body, a story a title, go beyond that and see the light we are.

Not a good narrative

The plot and story was okay, but I didn't like the narrative. I couldn't finish it.
