About this listen
Lady Emily Marlowe is beautiful, independent, and unspoiled. Deaf since childhood, she appreciates her family's efforts to nurture her spirit, but the man they've chosen for her betrothal can never fulfill her. The only one Emily has ever desired is bold and reckless Lord Ashley Kendrick. Her childhood amour inspired her fantasies and vowed never to forget her - even as he left her for a new life in India and a new love. Seven years and countless dreams later, Ashley has returned a desolate widower to Bowden Abbey and, true to his promise, to Emily. Yet his heedless proposal of marriage has left her unexpectedly conflicted. Though the heat of passion still burns, Emily fears that it's only a sense of duty - not love - that has brought him to bended knee. And what is she to make of those seven lost years clouded in secrets too dark for Ashley to share? For Emily, her greatest and only love now becomes one worth fighting for, one of startling revelations and second chances, and one, like a melody, too beautiful for words....

Captivating, exciting and sooooo romantic 🥰🥰
I’ve lately been reading quite a few of Mary Balogh’s books and must say I love her predilection for non stereotypical heroines, especially combined with historical settings. I often feel like when it comes to period pieces there’s a glossy superficial sheen over the characters but this author makes them feel real and human and in doing so makes the romance so much more… romantic. This book is no exception.
It is amazingly well written and the initial character portrayals and the following character developments are truly a masterpiece in writing. Everything is tied together and even though I could predict the culprit it wasn’t on the nose and kept you guessing up until the final point of solution.
The scenery described brings you in to the places and you feel like you’re there watching the characters and the love story develop. Oh and the love story.. swoony to say the least. 🤤🤤
Narration is great. Every now and again it made me feel a little detached but it was rarely and far between so I was able to look past it easily enough but is the only reason the performance didn’t get a full 5 star review.
Would absolutely recommend this book to just about anyone who’s looking for a beautiful love story.

Very sweet story
The narrator was excellent and portrayed the voice of a deaf mute rather well.
I am always amazed at how heroines in regency romance got away with extramarital affairs with no pregnancies.

Lovey Easy Listen.
The storyline was enjoyable. A nice form of escapism, which is needed at times in this harsh world.
There is no great suspense, which was not expected, more of a cosy warm blanket on a cold day.
The narration by Rosalyn Landor was truly wonderful.

Better Than Book One
Not necessarily an easy listen as some reviewers say, because it’s full of angst! But a smooth continuation from book 1 with 7 years worth of character development.
Ashley returns, troubled and guilt ridden. This transpires to be a mini mystery. With misunderstanding and misinformation which is not as laboured or as torturous as book one, Heartless.
Sometimes it seems as if the story is taking too long to tell, but it is well narrated by Rosalind.

I loved both the books!!!!!!!!!
Luke is 100% my favourite character in both books. He stands strong as the head of the family. Now to the book review.....I absolutely loved the first and second book, the author and Narrator did such an amazing job. the second book was worth the credit.

Disappointed
I normally enjoy this author but I was very disappointed in this book.
It was boring I got to chapter 5 and gave up
story rambled onwards, much to wordy I am so sorry to give this a bad review. Maybe I am not in the mood will try and read it again, Rosalind Landor was amazing as usual she was the reason I got as far as chapter 5.
If the review changes next time I re-listen I will be happy to review it again.

Too much angst
Drama queens in abundance spoil what could have been a really good story. Excellent narration.

A lesson in total selfishness.
The hero is totally self-absorbed. Imposes his opinion of what the heroine likes and needs on her. When she is fourteen, he gives her adult kiss. Then, though he thinks of her as a child, he has sex with her. He puts her up on a shelf and forgets about her. until others pay her attention. He never once asked her what she wanted, as he knew what was good for her. Then he takes her away, saying this is not the life she really wants. He is actually grooming her, to uses and discard as he wishes. Marriage to such a man would be excruciating.
It is always fascinating what "LOVE" is meant to tolerate. It is like self-flagilation. She is so in love and, of course, "deaf"; she accepts the abuse. She has others who love, yet she relies on this "Jerk", what a idiot!!!
